On Friday night, Jefferson-Morgan defeated California 28-27 to not only claim the Tri-County South title but complete their perfect regular season.

This game was, as the saying goes, “the tale of two halves.”

California started the game with the football, they punted. Jefferson-Morgan, thanks to the help of a 38-yard catch by WR Deakyn Dehoet scored a TD from RB John Woodward. Due to the blocked extra point, it was 6-0.

California and Jefferson-Morgan punted on their following drives, but with the final seconds ticking down California found the endzone off a 76–yard TD. The score was all tied at 7-6 California lead heading into the second quarter, but that lead did not last long.

Jefferson-Morgan scored only 10 seconds into the second quarter the game had it’s second 70+ yard TD with Rockets’ Houston Guesman found Dehoet and Jefferson-Morgan took the lead back 14-7.

We’d go 10 minutes later before the game saw its next score when Dehoet, again, got into the endzone. The Rockets, like they had all half, got the ball back and with the help of a tush push Jefferson-Morgan led 28-7 halftime.

Off the opening drive, California got a fourth-down stop on Jefferson Morgan and then scored less than two minutes later. QB Logan Hartley connected with Vincent Manzella for the second time and cut the Rocket lead down to 13.

California, like Jefferson-Morgan had in the first half, forced a turnover and Lee Qualk scored two plays later making the game 28-21 with a little over five minutes left in the third quarter.

Until one minute remaining in the fourth quarter, both defenses stood on their heads forcing punts and turnovers.

Jefferson-Morgan had intercepted the football with under three minutes left, and the sideline thought it was over. That was until California scored off of a Jefferson-Morgan bad punt snap that landed on the three-yard line.

The Trojans cashed in to bring the game within one, but the Trojans attempted the game-winning two-point conversion. As it happened to the Rockets…a bad snap would cost California the game.

Jefferson-Morgan finished their season 10-0 overall and , while California finished 7-3 overall and 6-1 in conference. Both teams now wait to see who they will face in the WPIAL playoffs starting next week on November 1, and 2.
