Laurel stunned top-seeded, undefeated Fort Cherry 24–14 in the WPIAL Class 1A semifinals, delivering one of the biggest upsets of the postseason. Fort Cherry struck early behind a 66-yard touchdown from Matt Sieg — who finished with 148 rushing yards and both Ranger scores — but the No. 1 seed couldn’t pull away. Penalties, stalled drives, and just nine first downs kept the Rangers from capitalizing, despite 184 team rushing yards.
The Spartans, the No. 4 seed at 11–1, steadily seized control with a bruising 301-yard rushing attack and a defense that shut out Fort Cherry after halftime. Kolton Carlson scored twice, including a 30-yard touchdown grab, and Jack Miles broke loose for a momentum-shifting 33-yard run to open the third quarter. A late 32-yard field goal from Tony Geiwitz sealed the deal, sending Laurel to the WPIAL championship and ending Fort Cherry’s perfect season.
