Herman – Leechburg outscored Summit Academy 27-6 in the second half en route to a 43-8 win over the Knights.

After turning the ball over on their first three possessions, the Blue Devils scored twice in the second stanza to gain a 16-2 halftime lead.

“We kept shooting ourselves in the foot in the first half,” said Leechburg head coach Randy Walters. “I liked the fact that they didn’t quit and kept fighting back. Summit has good athletes out there. Our second half was a lot better.”

Eli Rich scored on a pair of five-yard runs for the Blue Devils.

“Eli is a tough kid. We need guys like him,” said Walters. “He’s a heck of a football player and never comes off the field. We put a dive play in for him, and he was getting five yards at a time.”

The second quarter also featured a pair of safties.

Thomas Burke’s intercepted Kylee Davenport at the Blue Devils 1-yard line.

Braylan Lovelace was stopped in the end zone on the ensuing snap, and Summit Academy cut the deficit to 7-2 midway through the quarter.

Ryan Shaw’s punt then pinned the Knights at their 1-yard line, Aden Koimene couldn’t get out of the end zone.

Leechburg took their two points and used the short field to take the 16-2 lead into the locker room on Rich’s 5-yard run with 1:23 to play in the first half.

Braylan Lovelace scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns on runs of eight and one yard.

Summit Academy was able to crack the scoreboard on Koimene’s 6-yard run with 7:03 to play.

Kylee Davenport led the Knights with 108 yards rushing on nine carries. Koimene rushed for 27 yards on 12 carries.

Leechburg scored two touchdowns in the final 3:47 on Burke’s 26-yard touchdown pass to Logan Kline and Lovelace’s 8-yard run with ten seconds to play.

“We worked our tails off on defense. That’s what made us successful,” said Walters.

Burke completed 11-of-17, 170 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed for 28 yards on ten attempts.

Lovelace added 77 yards on 12 carries with three touchdowns. Rich chipped in with 66 yards rushing and the two scores while also receiving 81 yards for Leechburg.

“We’re focused on taking it one game at a time,” Walters concluded. “We haven’t had a winning season here in 31 years and haven’t been to the playoffs in 32 years. Those are our goals.”
