Last night I finally made it to Claysville to catch A McGuffey game and though the game was as one-sided as A game can be I still had a great time. Chartiers-Houston was the opponent even though they were never in this one, I can honestly say those young men never quit giving it all they had and they did so with class. Before getting to the game, I wanted to thank Head Coach Ed Dalton for allowing me to take this one in and cover it for PAFOOTBALLNEWS. I also have to say the McGuffey fans I set near was the funniest I have set near all season long.
The Buccaneers got A sideline pass to Justin Beekley but Beekley put the ball on the grey turf and coming out of the pile with it was Troy Falosk just 1:08 seconds into the game. That play seemed to set the tone for the rest of the game. One play after getting the ball, the Highlanders got a 13-yard touchdown from Tyler McCrery to go up 6-0 then the strong footed kicker for the Highlanders, Nate Witkowsky made the score 7-0 with his P.A.T. The Highlanders defense would get A Jack Lmvert type hit from Nathan Cumer, who leveled Jimmy Sadler for A 2-yard loss.
The Highlanders offense would get A nice 40-yard run from McKinley Whipkey. Whipkey capped off the 4-play, 51-yard drive with A 3-yard touchdown run, made easy with the work of his offensive line. The P.A.T. would make this A 14-0 game, with 7:34 left in the quarter. McGuffey would shut down the Buccaneers offense again, with the big play coming from Rocco Falosk when the talented senior leveled Sadler for A short loss.
A 17-yard run from Kyle Brookman set up the next McGuffey score and that was A 2-yard run from Rocco Falosk. Again the P.A.T. was true making this A 21-0 game, with 5:06 still left in the opening quarter. Staying with the theme of Sadler getting tackled for A loss after A McGuffey score Jeremiah Johnson would do the honors this time for A 7-yard loss. Sadler is A very solid ballplayer, who took his hits in this one but again the young man never seemed to quit trying.
This became A 28-0 game on A 4-yard run from Brookman and A PA.T. by Witkowsky. This drive totaled 24-yards and took all of 2-plays. The Buccaneers offense ended the quarter with A 34-yard run from Colton Craig. The Highlanders defense ended the drive as fast as the old Dallas Cowboys Doomsday defense did to many opponents back when my Cowboys had A defense.
Rocco Falosk, who is as dangerous running the ball as any quarterback I have watched this season used his feet and field vision to pick up 22 yards. Using the double handoff out of the Wing-T formation Brookman used the work of his offensive line to score on A 27-yard run to give his team A 28-0 lead. This drive went for 63-yards taking just 6-plays.
Colton Craig made A tough catch only to be hit by Etan Janovich for A 3-yard loss. The Highlanders offense was back on the field soon after the play. Jared Johnson would have his number called only to be plowed down by Jake Mele. Mele was impressive for the Buccaneers in defeat. He would save A touchdown when he tackled Johnson, who had picked up 33-yards on the run. Johnson would laugh last on the drive when he rushed in for A 14-yard outs to make this A 42-0 game, with 3:09 left in the half.
Eric Donnelly set up the next McGuffey scored when he picked off A Terry Fetsko pass that gave his offense A first and goal from the 3-yard line. Donnelly scored two plays later making this a 49-0 game, with 1:25 left in the half. As impressive as the Highlanders offense was, their defense was very machine-like, as they had shutout the Buccaneers offense and held them to an unofficial 110-yards.
Phillip McCuen was in at quarterback for the Highlanders and he picked up 19-yards on A nice run. Nathan Romestan picked up 15-yards to give the Highlanders A first and goal, from the 10-yard line. With McCuen temporarily out because of an injury, Ryan Keith came into play quarterback and he made a bad pitch resulting in A fumble, that was recovered by the Buccaneers Tayvian Miller on the 3-yard line, with 7:52 left in the third.
The defense from both teams made nice plays late in the quarter with Morgan Shriver stopping the Buccaneers Mele for A 3-yard loss, then it was #75 stopping McCuen, who was back in the game for A loss of three. However, the Highlanders offense recovered nicely, when Droboj picked up 32-yards on A emmit Smith type run to set up his own 1-yard score. The quarter ended with McGuffey leading 56-0.
Showing they had not quit the Buccaneers defense stopped Romestand for A loss of two, with #75 making the stop. Romestand would shake that play off by picking up 16-yards on his next carry. A bad snap led to A McGuffey fumble but this time Ryan Keith made the recovery to keep the drive alive. The Highlanders defense ended the game with two more nice plays. First Shriver and Breenen Mullins teamed up to drop Jason Irson for A loss of seven. To preserve the shutout Shriver stopped Irson on A fourth and goal try.
