On paper, Wash High and McGuffey faced off on Friday night for the difference between a 3 and a 4 seed in the Century conference. On the field, McGuffey stunned Wash High in the second half to win one of the biggest rivalries in southwestern PA.

Washington started out hot, moving down the field and capping the drive with a pass from Davoun Fuse to former McGuffey Highlander Logan Carlisle to put the Prexies up seven early.

McGuffey would answer back with a field goal to make it 7-3 with 8:18 left to go in the first quarter. Waynesburg responded with Carlisle, now in at QB, throwing to Ruben Gordon, who duck, spun and wove 57 yards to put the Prexies up by two scores with six minutes remaining in the 1st quarter.

McGuffey attempted to respond, however the Prexies blocked a Field goal attempt. On the following drive, the Prexies extended their lead when Davoun Fuse took a run 66 yards make the score 21-3 with 9:10 left in the second.

The game was far from over for the Highlanders. On 4th and goal from less than a yard, Philip McCuen scored on a quarterback sneak for McGuffey cutting the lead to 21-9 at the half.

McGuffey continued the comeback early in the second half, when they would drive down the field and cap it with a short scamper from Charles Wagers. Plays later at midfield, Eric Donnelly intercepted Fuse, and McGuffey was back in business again.

McGuffey kept on the gas. Dylan Droboj took a handoff from twenty yards out and carried Wash High defenders into the endzone. The eighteen point margin that the Prexies nearly walked into the locker rooms with was gone in the blink of an eye

Wash High would retaliate with a field goal to take back the lead at the start of the fourth quarter, but once again the Highlanders stayed hot on offense. Dylan Droboj found the endzone again with another punishing downhill run, and then a successful two point try gave McGuffey the 30-24 lead with 6:35 left.

Another Wash High turnover, another touchdown. The Highlanders extended the lead a play after creating the oppurtunity with Ethan Dietrich becoming the fourth Highlander to find the endzone on the night.

After another defensive stop, the Highlanders put a cap on the win. Phillip McCuen, the team leader who converted on a 4th and goal to pull the McGuffey deficit to twelve in the first half, found the endzone to end any hope of the Prexies coming back.

What’s Next: Both teams will enter the WPIAL playoffs, however with the loss, Washington moves to the four seed and could be playing a conference champion or runner up in Beaver Falls or Neshannock. McGuffey will also be hitting the road, but will not know until the full pairings are announced on Saturday at 2.
