Neshannock Township: Neshannock outscored Shenango 27-0 in the second half en route to a 42-8 win over the Wildcats.

“That was a great way to start the season,” said Neshannock head coach Fred Mozzocio. “We had some early jitters, penalties, and we didn’t have the ball much in the first half.”

Seniors Kurt Sommerfield and Cameron Owens led the Lancers as the two combined for all but 54 of Neshannock’s 293 yards of offense.

Owens ran for a game-high 106 yards on 15 carries, including 98 on 11 in the second half. Sommerfield was nearly perfect, throwing the ball going 11-for-12 with 113 yards and a 9-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie DeMase while adding 20 yards rushing and a score.

Things did not start well for Lancers as Shenango went on a 15-play drive to begin the game.

The Wildcats fumble a 4th-and-1 at the Lancer 9-yard line but still grabbed an early lead after a defensive stop when the ball snapped out of the end zone giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead with 1:34 to play in the first quarter.

Shenango then extended their lead to 8-0 when C.J. Miller broke loose for a 40-yard touchdown to begin the second quarter.

“I kept preaching the whole time that we needed not to panic and relax,” Mozzocio. “We knew what needed to do and knew we could win this game. Once we settled down, we were fine.”

Miller rushed for 78 yards on 15 carriers in the first half but only gained nine yards on six attempts in the second half.

Neshannock got rolling in the second quarter and never looked back.

After the Lancers were seemingly forced into a 4th-and-14, a personal foul penalty against Wildcats gave the Neshannock new life.

Luciano DeLillo raced 17 yards to get the Lancers tied at eight following a successful 2-point conversion.

Neshannock added to their lead just over minutes later, when Sommerfield scored on a 4-yard run.

The Lancers led 15-8 at halftime.

“We made a couple of adjustments on defense and focused on getting the ball in the hands of some of our different weapons in the second half,” said Mozzocio.

In the second half, Owens’s 1-yard run pushed the lead to 22-8.

Neshannock then put the final nail in the coffin by scoring three times in the last eight minutes.

Owens’s scored his second touchdown of the night from 34 yards out, Sommerfield tossed a 9-yard touchdown to DeMase. Finally, Peyton Weaver made his lone carry count with a 39-yard touchdown.

“It’s always nice to get that first win out of the way,” Mozzocio concluded. “Now we get to refocus for next week and attempt to get better from here on out.”
