Last year it was Gateway that won by a point. This year it was Peters Township that won by a point and getting revenge in their 20-19 victory over Gateway. “It’s just one of those games between 2 good football teams” said Coach Plack.

It was the tale of 2 halves with Gateway up 19-0 at half and then Peters Township scoring 20 in the second half and ultimately ended up winning. The first points of the game occurred on Gateway’s second drive when Jayson Jenkins kicked a 40 yard field goal making it 3-0.

On the next drive Peters Township went 3 and out and punted it back to Gateway. Gateway extended their lead on that drive on another field goal by Jayson Jenkins this one being 29 yards. Gateway led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter Peters Township had the ball and on the third play Logan Pfeuffer was intercepted by Diego Bledsoe and he took it 35 yards to the house which made the score 13-0 Gateway. “We gave our defense bad field position, we gave them a touchdown and good field position that whole first half” said Coach Plack.

Late in the quarter Peters Township turned the ball over again and Gateway started that drive at the Peters Township 18 yard line. With 15 seconds left before half Carsen Engleka connected with Jayden Hurt for a 8 yard touchdown. Engleka was 15 of 35 for 142 yards in the game. The score at the half was 19-0 Gateway.

Peters Township got the ball to start the second half and they started it exactly how they needed to. They started at their own 20 yard line and marched right down the field. Eventually they scored when Logan Pfeuffer connected with Nico Pate for a 2 yard touchdown. “That first score was major, we needed that” said Coach Plack.

Gateway went 3 and out on their first drive of the second half punting it back to Peters Township. Later on the drive Logan Pfeuffer threw another interception and Gateway had another golden opportunity starting at Peters Township’s 25 yard line. However Peters Township came up with a huge stop not allowing Gateway to score.

It was then when momentum shifted a little more. Pfeuffer completed a pass to the Gateway 38 yard line. Then on the next play Pfeuffer connected with Donovan McMillon for a 38 yard touchdown. That made the score 19-13 with 6:15 in the third quarter. Despite throwing 3 interceptions Pfeuffer had a decent night passing. He was 17 of 37 for 291 yards. “The second half he hung in there, he trusted us and he did the right things and we came up on top” said Coach Plack.

The second half was full of missed opportunities and mistakes by both teams. It was actually a carbon copy of last year’s championship game the only difference was it wasn’t raining. Gateway had several opportunities to make it a 2 possession game but weren’t successful.

After a missed field goal Peters Township started at their own 20 yard line. It was that drive which ultimately decided the game. One key play in Gateway territory was a pass interference call that negated Chamor Price’s pick 6 and gave Peters Township a first down. A couple plays later Logan Pfeuffer found Corban Hondru for a 4 yard touchdown with 4.7 seconds left. “We’re throwing it to 10, I know he’ll catch it, he’s tremendous, he’s the best high school player I’ve been around” said Coach Plack.

Next week Peters Township (8-0) will play Pine Richland (8-0) in the WPIAL 5A Championship game which is at North Allegheny Saturday at 7. “They’re an incredible program and I’m excited to play in the championship game against Pine Richland, I think we’ll be up for the challenge, we’re gonna put our A game out there and we’ll see what happens” said Coach Plack.
