Pine Richland pulls off upset of the year against Pittsburgh Central Catholic

This Friday night,  Pine Richland would shock everyone and knock off undefeated Central Catholic.

This game did not start well for the Rams as freshman quarterback Aaron Strader threw a pick-six that was caught by senior cornerback Jacob Sassic. The Vikings would not complete the two-point attempt, which made the score 6-0 with 10:39 left in the first. The Rams didn’t let that pick-six stop them, as they were able to drive the ball downfield in a wildcat formation. The drive was topped off by a touchdown run by Ethan Pillar. This was his first of three tonight. The Vikings would strike back fast, as Jacob Sassic would have a receiving touchdown, making it 13-7 at the end of the first.

To start the second quarter, the Rams and Vikings traded three-and-outs. The Rams began the scoring with a touchdown from running back, Ethan Pillar making it 14-13 in the Rams’ favor. Then, the Vikings drove the ball all the way to the 20-yard line but could not punch in a touchdown as they settled for a field goal making the score 16-14 going into the half.

The third quarter got underway with a drive from the Vikings, where they would get one first down and then turn the ball over. After that, it was all Rams football as Pine Richland running back Talan Hill Ressler completed a strong run that included making a man miss to score a touchdown.  After the touchdown, they would fail the point-after attempt, which put the Rams up 20 to 16 on the Vikings. The next drive from the Vikings started well, but after some costly dead-ball personal fouls, they would punt the ball again. Then, Ethan Pillar recorded his third rushing touchdown for the Rams. Score 26-16 Ram’s at the end of the third.

In the fourth quarter, the Vikings only put up three points making the score 26-19 Rams. The Rams would go three-and-out and punt the ball away. The Vikings got the ball back, and they slowly drove the ball up the field, but the Rams’ defense stopped them sealing the deal on the upset of the year.

After the game, I had the pleasure of speaking to Ethan Pillar who finished out the day with 295 total yards and 3 total touchdowns.
