Central Catholic started out their season by losing 4 of their first seven games, and 0-2 conference play. Since then they have won four-straight and scored 28+ points in all those games.
Central Catholic finished 9-3 on the year and 6-1 in conference. This puts Central at the number three seed.
Despite the early season struggles QB Payton Wehner finished third in the WPIAL in passing yards with 2,248 yards. Elijah Faulkner and Amari Shields combined have rushed for 994 yards and 9 touchdowns.
Last season North Allegheny fell just short as they lost in the WPIAL 6A championship game to Central Catholic 38-24.
During the regular season however these two teams had met with a result of a North Allegheny win. That game senior Andrew Gavlik ran the ball 25 times for 175 yards. Junior QB Logan Kushner only threw for 92 yards, however he rushed for 28 yards and the game’s only touchdown.
Kushner would finish the season with 1,189 passing yards and 12 touchdowns. Gavlik ran for 729 yards and 4 touchdowns. He averaged 104.1 yards per game and had 4 100+ yard games. Junior Khiryn Boyd led the team in receiving with 563 yards and four touchdowns.
These may not be crazy numbers, but the Tigers finished 10-1, and 4-0 in conference. This helped earn North Allegheny a number 1 seed in 6A.
So as we enter Saturday’s 6p.m competition between these two juggernaut football teams we can only sit and imagine the close matchup this is set to be.
