Coming into the night it was Plum’s offense that got them to where they are. But tonight it was about the defense in a 20-7 victory over Hampton. “We gave them some bad situations” said Coach Morgan.

For Plum it was 2 big plays that made the difference in the game. Hampton got the ball first but on the very first play a pass was intercepted. On the seventh play of Plum’s drive Eryck Moore scored on a 14 yard run making it 6-0 Plum with about 8 minutes in the first quarter.

Hampton’s next drive was promising and they were in Plum territory but they ultimately ended up turning the ball over on downs. A penalty started off Plum’s drive but that didn’t stop them, after that they tried a reverse which succeeded as Logan Brooks took it 74 yards to the house. “Offensively we’re explosive and they can score at any time” said Coach Morgan.

Again Hampton got the ball and again they had a good drive going and were in Plum territory but the drive ended with an interception. One of the keys in the game a combination of mistakes by Hampton and big plays by Plum.

After the turnover Plum didn’t get anything going and ended up punting it. Hampton was setup with great field position at Plum’s 40 yard line. They did get inside the the 20 but after that the drive stalled and they ended up turning over the ball on downs on an incomplete pass. Hampton was inside the red zone twice, but they had zero points to show for that. “Our defense was backs against the wall multiple times and never gave up anything” said Coach Morgan.

The score at halftime was 13-0 Plum. They got the ball to start the second half and eventually they would extend their lead when Ryan Hubner connected with Reed Martin. Both guys played a key role in the win for Plum. Hubner was 10 of 17 for 183 yards and Reed Martin had 5 catches for 108 yards in the game.

On the very next drive Hampton finally got on the scoreboard, it was a long drive that took over 10 plays, it was finished off by Joe Liberto on a 1 yard run.

Hampton was basically within striking distance the entire game, but mistakes plagued them especially on several big opportunities. They were unable to really get anything going. One thing that didn’t help Plum was they also turned the ball over several times. “It got ugly there for awhile, but whenever you have a pretty solid defense it kinda accommodates the lack of executing on offense, we gotta secure the ball moving forward” said Coach Martin.

The final score ended up being 20-7 Plum and they now improve to 5-0 on the season. “It’s a luxury we haven’t had here, it’s something we gotta take day by day and game by game” said Coach Martin. Next week Plum looks to continue their great season when they travel to Knoch and Hampton will travel to Indiana.
