Seneca Valley rolls past Butler

Butler – Seneca Valley won their third straight game up a 42-7 win over Butler Frida night at Art Bernardi Stadium.

“It was bitter-sweet tonight,” said Seneca Valley head coach Ron Butschle. “Penalties are things we need to fix. Offensively, we did well by running our tempo and creating big plays. We have things we need to clean up, but I’m happy our guys played hard and deserve this win.”

Seneca Valley scored three touchdowns in under seven minutes between the first and second quarters to build a 21-0 lead, and the Raiders never looked back.

The game started even for both teams, but with Butler driving inside the Raiders’ 25-yard line, Aiden Lyczek intercepted a Mac Schnur pass that led to Jackson Wetzel’s 4-yard touchdown reception from Graham Hancox to open the scoring late in the first quarter.

 

The Golden Tornado then fumbled the ball inside their 30-yard line, which led to Wyatt Carver’s 9-yard touchdown run 49 seconds into the second quarter.

“Whenever you get a turnover, you want to capitalize on it,” said Butschle. “To jump on them with two touchdowns following two turnovers was huge for us. More often than not, when you win the turnover battle, you win the game.”

Following a three-and-out by the Tornado, Navy recruit Luke Lawson hauled in a short pass and outraced the Butler defense down the far sideline for a 53-yard touchdown.

Lawson led all receivers with eight catches for 111 yards. Graham Hancox threw for 229 yards on 18-of-28 passing with two scores.

“Luke is a big-time player, and he plays that way every game,” Butschle said. “He’s a great player but an even better kid. He’s a smart and hard-working kid; it’s a pleasure to coach him.”

Butler then found the end zone for the only time in the game when Declan Dobson hauled a 17-yard touchdown pass from Schnur.

“Our guys came out and fought with them,” said Butler head coach Eric Christy. “We a coupled chances to bet the ball in the end zone, and we didn’t.

Schnur completed 14-of-39 passes for 186 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

The Raiders then extended their lead to 28-7 at halftime when Kai West scored on a 37-yard run.

West rushed for a game-high 81 yards on only five carries, while Carver chipped in with 50 yards on the ground.

“It’s a cliche, but if you can run the ball and control the line of scrimmage, you’re going to have success,” Butschle said.

Butler drove into the red zone on their next possession before halftime but turned the ball over on downs.

“So often, it’s little plays and sequences like that in the game that ends up being huge,” said Butschle.

The Golden Tornado then recovered a fumble to begin the second half and moved into the red zone, where they were turned away for a second time.

“We would have loved to have scored before halftime,” said Christy. “Then if would have been gotten one following the fumble it could have 28-21 real quick. That didn’t happen, and Seneca Valley has a great team, and they were picked to win their conference, and you can see why. You can’t give them second chances; you need to capitalize.”

Seneca Valley then drove down the field and scored on Carver’s second touchdown run of the game from 16 yards out.

The Raiders invoked the mercy rule on their next drive, as West scored on a 5-yard run.

Seneca Valley improves to 4-2 on the season and will look to keep the momentum going when they travel to play Hempfield next Friday.

Butler will look to rebound when they travel to Cupples Stadium to play undefeated Westinghouse.

“We have some positives we can take from this game; we were able to the ball and made some play but got too far behind,” concluded Christy. “We gave up some size tonight, but I’m proud of this group. They’re warriors, and we’re going to get better.”
