A young Seton LaSalle Rebel team struggled to keep up with an imposing group of South Park Eagles which led to a 21-14 loss and an end to the Rebels perfect WPIAL playoff record.
The game, which took place at Acruisure Stadium, started with a series of offensive plays by Seton LaSalle. The Rebels ended what would be their only offensive drive of the quarter with a punt on 4th and 5 by Jonathan Wega.
The Rebels defense was not able to stop South Park’s as Eagle Eric Doerue ran a 6-yard touchdown after a 12-play drive. Seton LaSalle was able to block the kick, putting South Park up 6-0 with 2:11 left in the first. A fumble recovered by South Park ended the first quarter.
The Rebel defense allowed another touchdown, this time a 1-yard run by Eagle quarterback Leniz, plus a completed 2-point conversion put South Park up 14-0 with 8:05 left in the second quarter.
“When you are down 14-0 to a team like South Park I do not care who you are, it is hard to come back from that” stated Seton LaSalle head coach, Tim Storino.
Seton LaSalle’s defense seemed to come alive forcing the Eagles to punt away from their own 7-yard line. This put them on offense on the 44-yard line which they were able to convert into a 32-yard touchdown by standout sophomore, Khalil Taylor who has garnered multiple D1 offers including Pitt, Penn State and Nebraska. Brayden Carter made the extra point to shorten South Park’s lead to 14-7. The rest of the first half occurred with no score change.
The Rebel defense was able to hold off the Eagle offense until 4:46 left in the third when Doerue ran 8-yards for a touchdown. A made kick extended South Park’s lead to 21-7. The third quarter ended with no more changes in score.
“They [South Park] were playing 1970s football” stated Storino, “When they lined up for defense on the first play it was nothing we had seen on film.”
Seton LaSalle started the fourth quarter with a bang with a 51-yard touchdown by Richard Littlejohn with a throw from Micheal Pastirik less than a minute into the quarter. Carter made the extra point which put the score within one touchdown. The rest of the quarter was a back and forth between the teams until the Eagles put up a dominating drive where they were able to run the clock out. South Park won with a final score of 21-14. South Park will compete in the first round of the PIAA playoffs against the winner of Cambria Heights and Central Clarion
