The rivalry between Mt Lebanon and Upper St Clair was on full display last night as the two opened their 2024 campaigns. The Upper St Clair home crowd was very impressive, while Mt Lebanon brought a huge contingent of students and fans on the 6 minute trip to Upper St Clair.
The game began with demonstrations of offensive capabilities as Mt Lebanon drove 53 yards to the USC 11 yard line before kicking a field goal. Upper St Clair answered by marching 63 yards to the end zone to take a 7-3 lead. We then saw Mt Lebanon falter for the first time giving the ball back to Upper St Clair who promptly another touchdown to advance their lead to 14-3. Mt Lebanon marched 60 yards down the field but came up short on a 4th and 1. The Lebo defense stepped up and got the ball back for their team and they did not waste the opportunity again. Mt Lebanon scored after a 67 yard drive and the score was 14-9. This was not the end of the first half scoring as USC quarterback Ethan Hellman connected with his receiver Bryce Jones for a 46 yard score.
Upper St Clair lead 21-9 with 48 seconds remaining in the half. Mt Lebanon quarterback Pat Smith threw an interception and three plays later Daute Coury punched it in for USC. The score at the half was 28-9. The USC Panthers picked up where they left off in the 3rd with a 57 yard touchdown run for Nico D’orazio and on the next drive a 32 yard touchdown run by Julian Dahlem. These two scores made took the game to 42-9 in favor of the Panthers. Upper St Clair would pull the majority of their starters at this point in the game. Two garbage time touchdowns by Mt Lebanon would tighten the score to 42-22 before the final bell.
The Upper St Clair fans went home happy with a team that scored at will and appears to be a very good football team. Mt Lebanon will have some work to do to analyze what went wrong on both sides of the ball but primarily why they could not stop the USC offense.
