One week after beating Aliquippa, Montour was looking to clinch the Parkway conference outright. Instead West Allegheny pulled off the stunner beating Montour 13-7 in overtime. “We knew we were going to see a good team Montour’s a good team, Aliquippa is obviously a good team, we had our opportunities against Aliquippa we just came up a little short there, we came into this week looking at that as an opportunity to beat the team that beat Aliquippa and we took advantage of it” said Coach Schoppe.
Montour got the ball first and wasted no time taking the lead. On the first play Trey Hopper found Marcus Battles for a 63 yard touchdown pass. That made the score 7-0 Montour just 18 seconds into the game.
Thanks to a big kick return West Allegheny had a golden opportunity to even it up. They started at the Montour 45 yard line. Unfortunately they couldn’t move the ball and went three and out and punted it away back to Montour.
Montour started their second drive on their own 17 yard line but that drive also was a three and out. The rest of the first quarter was more of the same with neither team unable to move the ball.
West Allegheny finally started to get something going in offense. The drive started at their own 18 yard line. A run by Brock Cornell got them out past midfield down to the Montour 44 yard line. The drive got inside the 30 yard line but after that the drive stalled and West Allegheny turned the ball over on downs.
Montour got the ball at their own 31 yard line and Montour hit a big play when Trey Hopper completed a pass to AJ Alston down to the West Allegheny 25 yard line. On fourth down they decided to attempt a field goal which was no good and the score remained 7-0 Montour.
The rest of the first half was more of the same with both teams struggling to move the ball and none of the drive went past midfield so the score at halftime was 7-0 Montour.
West Allegheny got the ball to start the second half and it was looking like a good drive it featured several big runs and was inside the Montour 30 yard line. However on second down the ball was intercepted which end the good drive.
Montour went three and out on their first drive of the second half. West Allegheny started at the Montour 42 yard line and they were finally able to get something going on offense. After a big run they were on the Montour 6 yard line and a couple plays Brock Cornell scored on a 1 yard run. That tied the score at 7 with 1:54 in the third quarter. Cornell was a key player in the win for West Allegheny he had 116 yards on 31 carries.
Montour’s next drive started at their own 48 yard line thanks to a failed onside kick by West Allegheny. They did move the ball into West Allegheny territory but the drive stalled. For the most part West Allegheny was able to shut down Montour’s offense. “Coach Cornell and his staff spent countless hours watching film and preparing for every week, every game, I can’t say enough about the defensive staff, they’re top notch, some of the best guys I’ve had the opportunity to work with for 32 years” said Coach Schoppe.
On one drive West Allegheny had a big run and an additional penalty down to the Montour 13 yard line. They decided to go for it on fourth down but did not convert and that gave Montour the ball back at their own 6 yard line. For the rest of the game both teams were unable to move the ball so the game went to overtime tied at 7.
Montour got the ball first in overtime and got it down to the 2 yard line. Just like last week Montour decided to go for it but the risk didn’t pay off.
On second down Roman Police scored on an 8 yard run to win the game for West Allegheny. “A whole lot of emotions and excitement just seeing the kids run down there and celebrate is something I’ll remember the rest of my life” said Coach Schoppe. “A lot of excitement it was awesome, my team is rushing toward me jumping up in the air it was awesome” said Police.
The win by West Allegheny forces a three way tie for the Parkway conference. Due to tiebreaker points the title goes to Aliquippa and after that it reverts back to head to head which makes West Allegheny two, and Montour three.
