It’s been a long time coming for the West Greene Pioneers. Coming into 2021, West Greene had not beaten Carmichaels since 1993. That would change Friday night at Carmichaels.
With the Pioneers victory over California early in the season, both teams would enter the night searching for an inside track to the conference title. Both teams would have talents on offense, with Carmichaels boasting one of the top QBs in the region in Trenton Carter, and West Greene with one of the top rushers in Collin Brady.
The game opened up looking like it would be a high scoring affair, with Carmichaels marching down the field on their opening drive, draining clock, and entering the endzone on a 4th down dart from Carter to Zack Kerik.

From that point on, it would be all Pioneers. On the next drive, after rushing up the gut on every play previous, Wesley Whipkey would pull up and find Nathan Orndoff downfield to tie the game up for the West Greene.

In the second quarter and for much of the rest of the game, the Pioneers wore down the Mikes on defense while feeding the running game and draining the clock on offense. The Orndoff connection through the air on 4th down would lead to a Whipkey keeper in the mid 2nd to put the Pioneers up by 7.
The dagger for the Mikes would be on the following kickoff, when Tyler Richmond would fumble, giving the Pioneers prime field position. Four plays later, Collin Brady would find the back of the endzone to go up by 14 heading into the half.
“My linemen took a step up tonight,” Brady said. “Carmichaels had some big guys on their line, but we stepped up and opened the holes when we needed them.”

The second half would be dominated by one team, and in specific one player. Collin Brady, who showed flashes as the Pioneers freshman phenom runner in 2020 would take the game into his hands in the second half. With the game almost in hand, Brady would take it up the seam and to the house from 48 yards out, a virtual nail in the coffin for the Mighty Mikes.

With nearly 4 minutes left in the game, Brady would add to his touchdown total again. From 41 yards out, Brady would slice his way in for 7 more, silencing the Pioneers demons and beating the Mikes by a score of 41-20.

With the victory and the two toughest opponents in the Tri-County South in the rear-view mirror, West Greene has all but locked up the Conference title with the win. The Pioneers will host Bentworth on Homecoming next Friday. Carmichaels will return home to face the surging Monessen Greyhounds.
Collin Brady was quick to emphasize not letting the win get to the Pioneers’ heads. “We just got to keep chugging along, being where we need to be and playing good football.”
