Western Beaver raced out to a 36-0 halftime lead, and never looked back giving 1st-year head coach Derek Moye his first victory.

“It was a little sloppy in the beginning, but we came up here and got the win which is the ultimate goal,” said Western Beaver Derek Moye. “We’re happy leaving here with a win, and now it’s on to the next game.”

Sophomore Cam Irvine rushed for 120 yards on 17 carries. He rushed for 104 in the first half including three touchdowns.

“I’ve been pleased with Cam since the time we got to camp,” said Moye. “He’s matured a lot since I’ve had the chance to meet him. His maturity really showed on the field today with his performance. I expect him to be one of our guys this year. He took a step in the right direction to do that today.”

Irvine ran for scores of 14, two, and eight yards in the first half.

Thaddeus Gray accounted for two touchdowns. He scored on a 2-yard run and tossed a 13-yard touchdown to brother Noah Gray. Thaddeus Gray threw for 42 yards and rushed for 44.

Western Beaver invoked the mercy-rule by halftime. The Golden Beavers defense limited the Knights to just negative five yards rushing and only 27 yards of offense in the first half.

“Without a doubt, our defense played well,” said Moye. “We have a fast and athletic defense. We look for that to be one of our strengths this season. This game was a great starting point for us.”

Junior Elias Bishop caught a 26-yard touchdown from Xander Lefebvre, while Bishop also returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown giving the Golden Beavers a 48-0 lead after quarters.

“This game was a good starting point for us, but we still have a long way to go,” said Moye. “We have high expectations and goals for our team this season. This was a great way to start, but it’s over with and time to move on.”

Summit Academy was able to get a pair of 4th-quarter touchdowns on short runs by Raymond Poellnitz-Cutler and Paul Hines.

“They were more prepared than we were,” said Summit Academy head coach Joe Marak. “They came out ready, and they took it to us right away. I tip my cap to them. These kids came out and worked hard all week, and we as coaches dropped the ball this week.”

Poellnitz-Cutler led the Knights with 112 yards of total offense.

“We started off very sluggish, but there at the end, we had a few sparks,” said Marak. “When we got down early, and that took us out of our gameplan. We need to be better prepared from now on.”
