The Woodland Hills Wolverines (2-2) beat the Penn-Trafford Warriors (3-1) in a 5A Big East section matchup on Sept 12. In a game with the most exciting first quarter ever played at Wolvarena, the defending Big East champions of Woodland Hills come out on top due to senior running back Taylor Reid’s hat trick of touchdowns and Scoop Smith’s unstoppable speed.

The majority of the action took place in the first quarter and started with a Wolverine touchdown by Reid, handed off by senior QB Cam Walter, six minutes into the game, putting Woodland Hills up 6-0.

Penn-Trafford quickly answered back with their own running back touchdown by junior Ben Grabowski, handed off by his senior QB Nate Desmond. Extra point was made by freshman Trey Miller, putting P-T up 7-6.

Wolverine and Miami Ohio commit Smith took that lead right back for his team as he scored an 80-yard touchdown on P-T’s kickoff. Freshman kicker Danny Fataki made the extra point, and Woodland Hills took the lead 13-7 with 4:02 left in the first.

The Wolverines do not hold the lead for long, though, as P-T sophomore Cody Yacamelli scored a touchdown on Woodland Hill’s kickoff. Miller made the extra point, and the Warriors took the lead for the last time of the game with a score of 14-13.

Smith got his second touchdown of the night after taking it to the endzone on P-T’s next kickoff, making it four touchdowns on four plays. Walter threw Smith the two-point conversion, and Woodland Hills took the lead 21-14 to end the first quarter.

Wolverine Reid made the only score of the second quarter with a 7-yard touchdown. Fataki made the extra point, and Woodland Hills extended their lead to 28-14.

The third quarter was filled with flags and strong defenses until Wolverine QB Walter found the endzone with a 9-yard touchdown. Smith ran in the two-point conversion, and Woodland Hills led 36-14.

The third quarter ended with a pick-six by Wolverine senior Landon Akins, and Woodland Hills extended its lead to 42-14.

P-T finally answered their scoring drought with a linemen touchdown by senior Lucah Butler after a fumble in the endzone. Miller made the extra point, and Woodland Hill’s lead was now only 41-21.

It was not enough for the Warriors, though, as the game ended how it started, with a 35-yard touchdown from Woodland Hill’s own Reid.

Woodland Hills won with a final score of 49-21. Woodland Hills will play Shaler Area away next Friday, while P-T will take on Kiski at home.
