At one time the Aliquippa – Ambridge game was considered one of the best rivalry games in Western PA. But over the years the rivalry became very one sided after the late 80’s with the Quips mostly on the “W” side of the column. This Friday night proved no different. The 2020 Quips are a young, talented team trying to find their identity, while the Bridgers are trying to just find their way. Riding the arm of quarterback Vaughn Morris & his 4 touchdown throws the Quips blanked the Bridgers 44-0 at Carl Aschman Stadium. Senior Running Back also chipped in with 2 touchdowns, but the story of the night was Aliquippa’s defense.

Said Aliquippa defense coordinator Coach Dan “Peep” Short “We are working through the process, playing a lot of young guys at this point, they are learning, reading their keys – we are just scratching the surface with the late start.” We only have approximately a 1/3 of our defense in, we are just scratching the surface. Asked about the playmaking ability of his defense “We are young all over,  two sophomores started in the secondary, along with a junior and a senior, we had three  sophomores up front but they are responding we are getting them ready through these three exhibition games in the beginning of the schedule.” Asked to what effect the late start to the season has hurt the youth on the defensive side ” We didn’t worry about covid stuff – we coached our kids through it, they know when they are here it’s time to work, they know what they are measured against – all the great ones that came before them that made it to the top.” We expect growing pains, we will watch the film, correct things and get ready for next week, and to play better next week, we expect them to get better each week, we know where we need to get to.” If tonight proved anything it proved that youth is served and the Quips are going to be very dangerous down the stretch.
