Youth and Speed Shine in Pitt’s Blue and Gold Game

Many college football fans know you can’t put too much stock into a spring game—it’s not a fully live event, and the schemes are usually bland. Still, there’s value in watching how young players perform under the spotlight. Pitt’s annual Blue and Gold Game offered fans a glimpse of some emerging talent, particularly a few young players who showcased impressive speed and playmaking ability. With that in mind, let’s break down a few of the noteworthy standouts from this year’s spring showcase.

Starting on the offensive side of the football, true freshman Mason Heintschel had a stellar day, demonstrating both his football IQ and a strong arm. Heintschel went 8-for-11 for 114 yards, including a highlight-reel 65-yard touchdown on an RPO play that garnered attention. Head Coach Pat Narduzzi praised the freshman, saying, “Mason has some swagger to him and made some good plays today.” Heintschel wasn’t the only quarterback to impress. Penn Hills’ own Julian Duggar continued his strong spring with another solid showing, boosting his stock further in a competitive quarterback room. Eli Holstein also benefited from a talented receiving corps that put on a show throughout the game. Kenny Johnson, Justin Cook, Cam Sapp, and Cataurus Hicks all displayed speed, crisp route-running, and reliable hands. In his postgame press conference, Johnson mentioned how confident he feels going into the season, saying he’s more comfortable knowing there are playmakers around him who can step up when needed.

With the offense covered, let’s turn to the defense. Linebacker Cameron Lindsey took another significant step forward—not just on the field, but off it as well. He finished the day with five total tackles, including one for a loss, and made a crucial pass deflection in the back of the end zone. Linebackers coach Ryan Manalac praised Lindsey’s development, stating: “Cam Lindsey’s been fun to watch this spring. He comes to work every day and works really hard. I think he looks good—you probably noticed he looks bigger, stronger, and more confident for sure. He got a hand on the ball, made some plays out there. It’s not live, so you don’t always get to see him finish, but he’s definitely aggressive. I’m excited about his growth, and I think he’s going to have an impact this year.” Another standout was Shadarian Harrison, who looked sharp coming off a shoulder injury. Harrison made his presence felt with two interceptions and four total tackles, showcasing his instincts and ball skills. Head Coach Pat Narduzzi praised the young defensive back: “Happy for him, but it really came down to his knowledge,” Narduzzi said. “He came into this spring knowing what he was doing.”

Overall, Pitt’s spring game was a success. Coach Narduzzi got a good look at the speed, youth, and depth his team brings to the table, alongside the core of returning talent that will lead the way in 2025. With young players stepping up and veterans holding strong, there’s plenty of reason for optimism. The Panthers will officially kick off their season on August 30th when they host the Duquesne Dukes at Acrisure Stadium.
