Pittsburgh – Allderdice completed its playoff revenge tour with a 14-0 shutout of Westinghouse Saturday to win their third District 8 Title since 2017.

The Dragons avenged a 41-12 loss to the Bulldogs on September 18th.

“Our kids bought into the last three of four weeks and started getting focused again,” said Allderdice head coach Jerry Haslett. “Sometimes, with young kids, they need focus. Once they figured out that we’re a pretty good football team, it’s been showing. It certainly did again today.”

That was nothing new. A week ago, on October 21st, Allderdice beat Brashear 22-8 after falling 38-22 to the Bulls the prior week.

Defense ruled the day as not only did Dragons shut out the Bulldogs, they also opened the scoring.

Following a punt that pinned Westinghouse at their 9-yard line, the stripped quarterback Nick Morsillo and DeAndre Wells recovered the ball for a touchdown.

“Our defense was flying around, and offensively we held on to the football,” said Haslett. “We did what we needed to come out with a win, but the defense won this game.”

Things then went from bad to worse for the unbeaten Bulldogs as Davon Fennell could not corral a punt snap on their next drive, resulting in an 11-yard loss and a safety.

“It’s the postseason, and you don’t see the same team twice,” said Westinghouse head Donta Greene. “Jerry Haslett had those guys ready to rock and roll, and they did. Allderdice played very well today.”

Late in the first half, the Dragons extended their lead as Jaerone Parker connected with Noah Johnstown for a 25-yard touchdown pass with 53 seconds to play.

Westinghouse was held to only 23 yards of offense in the first half.

“It was a mixture of what they were doing on defense and what we were not doing on offense,” said Greene. “They had an excellent game plan put together for us and executed better than we did.”

The Bulldogs struggled again in the second half offensively, gaining 85 with a pair of turnovers on Johnstown interceptions.

Westinghouse was only able to penetrate as deep as the Dragons 23-yard line.

Both teams’ defense stood tall in the second half.

For Allderdice, that’s all it took to wrap up the City League Title.

“I feel great for these kids,” Haslett concluded. “I always tell them, you need to act like young men. Once you start acting like that, the football stuff will take care of itself.”

Both teams will advance to the state playoffs as Westinghouse will meet the District 5 AA Champion. Allderdice will play the District 10 6A Champion.

“We’re excited about being able to still compete in the PIAA playoffs,” Greene concluded. “We need to lick our wounds, for a lot of our guys, this is their first loss in high school. This one hurts, but we have to regroup and get back to work on Monday.”
