Brashear Bulls Its Way To 24-0 Victory Over Perry

After losing two competitive games to start the season to Westinghouse(20-0) and Allderdice(9-6) the Brashear Bulls faced a turning point situation in this shortened City League season. The Bulls responded well and pulled away from Perry for a 24-0 victory on Thursday night at Cupples Stadium.

THE GAME

Brashear took the kickoff to their 36 and began the opening drive. Two plays later, they would fumble a handoff and Terrance Fearbry jumped on it.  The teams traded a series of three an outs throughout the first quarter before Brashear took over with 3:00 to go inside the Perry 20. On third down, QB Zaire Nelson hit sophomore stud Ta’ Mere Robinson for a 19 yard TD pass, in which Robinson stretched out and kept one foot inbounds for a fantastic grab. The conversion failed and it was 6-0 with 1:35 to go in the quarter in favor of the Bulls.

After a drive stalled to open the quarter for the Bulls, Perry took over and Ray Dean kept for a big 29 yard gain to put Perry out to midfield, but their drive would stall there. Brashear took over on their 30 after the Commodores punted. After a penalty and a carry by Nelson, he uncorked a 43 yard pass to Daquan Griffin to get down to the Perry 1. After a carry for loss and a penalty, Brashear faced 3rd and goal from the 8. Solomon carried through a handful of Perry tacklers for a Bulls TD. The conversion was no good and with 1:15 to go in the second, Brashear led Perry 12-0.

Perry went three an out to start the second half, but a good punt and a block in the back pushed Brashear back to their own 12 to start their opening drive of the third quarter. The Bulls got to the 28 but fizzled out. After a punt, Perry took over at midfield with 5:45 to go in the third quarter of what was proving to be an excellent defensive battle, but would once again go 3 and out. They attempted a pass on fourth down, but Davis’ toss was in and out of the hands of Tyreese Fearbry, giving Brashear the ball back with 3:06 to go in the third. Rasheed Saunders powered through several of the front 7 of Perry and went 39 yards to extend the score to 18-0 with 1:21 to go in the third, with the kick no good.

Perry turned the ball over on downs at the beginning of the fourth quarter and on the ensuring drive, Brashear added another score as Saunders scored his 2nd TD of the night from 26 yards, making it 24-0 in favor of the Bulls, which would be the final score.

FINAL THOUGHTS

For Perry: Commodores start 4 sophomores on the O-Line, none of whom have ever played organized football before from what an assistant in the booth told me this evening. Their growth will be a big part of this program for the future—If they can begin to gel and grow together in the offseason by hitting the weights, putting in the cardio and working on their formations together, they could grow into a solid unit. The success of Perry offensively for the future will rest on the shoulders of these youngsters. Next year should be a significant step forward for them.

Perry’s also got Tyreese Fearbry, who just picked up an offer from Pittsburgh on top of offers from WVU and Toledo and is without question the top defensive lineman in the City League—To that point—We’re seeing teams running away from him now. Brashear’s biggest gains came on runs to the side that the 6’5”-210 junior wasn’t on. He’s a player who will absolutely be a “must see” in his senior year.

For Brashear: The Bulls have a hard hitting defense and a good quarterback in Zaire Nelson. He’s got a solid arm and can move as well. If the line can protect him a bit more, he could do some damage.

They showed tonight they have a big play offense capable of big gains to set up or produce scores, but Brashear, like most of the City League, needs to become a more consistent unit offensively. It’s great to see a 39 yard TD run or a 43 yard pass here or there along with a few 11 yard gains but consistency on offense is a big piece of what creates winning teams—The ability to gain 4 or 5 yards a carry consistently, the ability to hit 8-12 yard passes that move the sticks.

Individually, the Bulls also have a major recruit in class of 2023 athlete Ta’Mere Robinson, who’s also got an offer from Pitt, along with Michigan, Penn State, Syracuse and West Virginia. Saunders was near to 100 yards on just 3 carries and had two TD runs of beyond 20 yards. He’s going to mature into an absolutely electric player.
