Brockway Ekes Out the Overtime Win Against DuBois

Only eleven miles separate Brockway and DuBois.  Yet they have only met four other times in their history.  The most recent was last year’s heart stopper where DuBois stopped a slant pass at their one-yard line as time expired to preserve the 27-26 win.  That DuBois victory upped the Beavers’ all-time record against Brockway to 4-0.  Last night before perhaps the largest crowd to ever witness a game at Frank Varischetti Field in Brockway, the Rovers won their first game ever against the Beavers, 14-13 in overtime.

It didn’t start out as a defensive struggle, however the last three quarters was nothing but, as both defenses were dialing in all they could muster to stop the other guy’s offense.  DuBois scored on their first drive and Brockway their second possession.  And that was it until both offenses crossed the goal line in overtime.

The Rovers received the kickoff, got a first down, and had the ball at their 48 when Brayden Fox fumbled and Landon Schrock recovered for the Beavers at Brockway’s 44.  Facing a 4th and five at the Rover 39, DuBois quarterback Trey Wingard rolled out to his right and threw a perfect pass to Nathan Kougher who had a step on his man.  Kougher hauled in the pass and stepped into the end zone for the night’s first points.  Isaac Brigger kicked the PAT and Dubois Led 7-0 with 7:52 on the first period clock.

Like most good teams do, Brockway answered DuBois with a score of their own.  The Rovers embarked on a ten play, 64-yard drive culminating in Blake Pisarcik’s 2-yard run with 3:21 still left in the first.  Caleb Daugherty kicked the all-important extra point to tie the game.  Daugherty is not Brockway’s regular place kicker, but was pressed into duty because the regular kicker has a concussion.

On the next Beaver possession, Wingard hurt his non-throwing hand and did not return to the game.  Landon Schrock found himself at the QB position thereafter and did a real nice job, going 4 for 8 for 53 yards passing.  He did throw an interception as time was winding down before the half.  Schrock also accounted for 54 rushing yards on 10 carries.  The leading rusher for DuBois was Garret Nissel who ran for 84 yards on 19 totes.

In the second half DuBois reached the Brockway 13 and turned the ball over on downs when the running back was stopped for no gain on a 4th and two situation.  Then about half way through the last quarter, Edward Burkett was just wide on a 37-yard field goal try.

Brockway had a couple of chances too, but the Beaver defense threw up a wall.  DuBois fumbled on the first play after the kickoff and Jendy Cuello recovered for the Rovers at the DuBois 31.  Brockway never got closer than the 29 before turning it over on downs.  Early in the fourth quarter, Brockway drove to the DuBois 20 before penalties and the DuBois defense stopped them.

In overtime, Blake Pisarcik took a flip pass as he ran in front of Fox and then swept around the end for a 10-yard touchdown.  Daugherty in turn nailed what turned out to be a very crucial PAT.  DuBois knew what they had to do and they did it, scoring their second touchdown on 4th down.  Schrock ran twice for 7 yards and 3 yards sandwiched around a yard loss when Danny Dixon was met in the backfield by the Rovers.  Nissel scored on a one-yard dive play to put the score at 14-13.  The DuBois PAT was wide right which resulted in a wild and boisterous celebration from the Brockway football team and their fans.

DuBois outgained Brockway 262 to 194 in yardage.  Besides Schrock and Nissel, Dixon contributed 40 yards on the ground for the Beavers.  Cuello led all ball carriers with 107 yards rushing on 25 touches.  Fox was 9 for 19 in the passing department for 90 yards.  DuBois falls to 1-1 on the young season, while Brockway goes to 2-0.  Next week Brockway hosts Coudersport and DuBois will travel to Northern Bedford.  According to most estimates, over 3,500 people witnessed the game and Brockway only seats around 2,700 according to a couple Brockway officials.
