Trick plays are fun to watch, especially when they’re done to perfection. Central used two of them, a timely fourth down stop from the Dragon defense and got some key turnovers when needed to take a 25-21 win over Clearfield. Trailing by 2 with just over 2 minutes to play, Central QB/DB Jeff Hoenstine launched into the air and picked off Clearfield quarterback Oliver Billotte give the Dragons the ball at their own 22 yard line. Six plays later Hoenstine, Josh Biesinger and Parker Greg executed to perfection the “hook and ladder” play to come from behind and get the win over a tough Bison team.

“It was a good football game between two good teams. We practiced that this week and it work. When we had to score, we were able to” said Dragon head coach Dave Baker.
The game started with a bang for Central when Hoenstine hit Hunter Smith for a 52 yard bomb to put the Dragons up 7-0. Later in the second quarter, Hoenstine drove his offense to the Clearfield 19 yard line where he took the snap and tossed the ball to Eli Lingenfelter, who in turn found Devon Boyles wide open in the endzone to give Central a 13-0 lead.

Clearfield struck back quickly when Billotte found a seam in the middle and dashed 34 yards to bring the Bison within 6. “Boy, you can’t complain about that game” said Clearfield head coach Tim Janocko. “They made one more play than we did. There were a lot of big plays out there tonight.” Billotte started off with four straight incompletions, then he found his groove. An eight yard reception by Jake Lezzer opened the gates. On the final Clearfield drive of the first half, the duo connected 3 times, the third a beautiful catch in the corner of the endzone to give Clearfield a 14-13 edge at halftime. Lezzer finished the game with 10 receptions for 176 yards.

“It is hard to stop Lezzer and Billotte. It looked at times like we could move the ball, but at times we just couldn’t stop them” said Baker. The Bison extended their lead on the first drive of the second half, a 10 play, 59 yard drive capped with a 2 yard from from Mark Mcgonigal to make it a 21-13 game with 6:02 left in the third quarter. It took just two plays for the Dragons to pull within 2 points when Hoenstine found Demetrious Harbaugh for a 59 yard scoring strike.

The most important play for Central’s defense came with Clearfield facing fourth and 2 at the Dragon ten. The Central line stood tough and stopped Mcgonigal just short of the sticks. Central couldn’t move the ball, but on the ensuing drive for Clearfield Hoenstine made the diving interception to set up the winning drive.
