With upsets abound across the state in week zero, District 9 certainly wasn’t immune from ranked teams and odds-on favorites going down in flames.  Let’s start with the biggest upset of all, the Keystone Panthers beating Redbank Valley’s Bulldogs 22-20.  Redbank is the defending D-9 Class A champs and returns much of their core from 2020.  RBV’s defense held Keystone’s offense to a grand total of 83 yards and no touchdowns.  It was the Panthers’ defense and special teams that did all the scoring with a safety, two pick sixes, and an 80-yard kickoff return by Zander McHenry in the fourth quarter that was the difference maker.

Another big surprise was Cameron County putting an end to their 20-game losing streak by scoring 14 points in the last five minutes to shock Coudersport who was considered to be a legitimate contender to swiping Redbank’s district crown.  Cameron County’s QB, Maddox Baughman, threw for 195 yards and all 4 touchdowns.  In addition, he intercepted two Coudy passes and undoubtedly was the player of the game.  One of Baughman’s wide receivers, Dylan Baney, had four receptions for 112 yards and 2 scores.

The third unexpected outcome found the Ridgway Elkers beating the St. Marys Flying Dutchmen handily 24-7.  Dom Allegretto rushed for 126 yards and scored three touchdowns.  Elker QB Jonathan Hinton was 10 for 11 passing for 99 yards.  The Ridgway defense limited a potent St. Marys passing attack.  St. Marys was Honorable Mention in Class 3A state polls.  The fourth and final upset was Brockway, with a freshman quarterback, stopping Union-AC Valley 28-20.  That freshman QB, Brayden Fox, threw for 280 yards and 3 TDs.  He also ran for what turned out to be the winning touchdown early in the third quarter.  Jalen Kosko grabbed 6 of Fox’s passes for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The top quarterback performers for the weekend were Charlie Krug (Brookville) with 209 yards and a touchdown; David Deccisino (Moniteau) with 178 yards passing and a touchdown; Harley Morris (Kane) had 126 yards and a TD; Ben Paul (Elk County Catholic) threw for 123 yards and a score; Oliver Billotte (Clearfield) had 201 yards and a TD throw.  He also ran for 66 yards and 2 more scores; Noah Lent (Smethport) with 170 yards and 4 TDs.  He also ran for 96 yards and a couple more touchdowns; Drew Evens (Port Allegany) 202 yards and 2 TDs; Dan McGarry (Curwensville) with 117 yards; Gavyn Ayers (Coudersport) accounted for 157 yards and 3 touchdowns passing and running combined; Elijah Fitton (Bradford) had 151 yards passing and scored a rushing touchdown; Gunner Mangiantini (Redbank Valley) 117 yards and a TD.

The top wide receivers for the weekend include Brayden Kunselman (Brookville) who caught 10 passes for 146 yards and ran a kickoff back 83 yards; Karson Kline (Clearfield) 8 catches for 161 yards and a TD; Cooper Boozel (Moniteau) with 10 grabs for 130 yards and a touchdown; Joe Tettis (Elk County Catholic) with 93 yards and a TD.

The top rushers for week zero were Mikey Card (Union-AC Valley) 107 yards; Card’s teammate, Dawson Camper, scored 3 touchdowns on the ground; Breckin Rex (Central Clarion) had 94 yards; Ben Reynolds (Elk County Catholic) rushed for 98 yards and 2 scores; Luke Garing (Karns City) had 3 touchdowns; teammate Jayce Anderson ran for 84 yards; Blaine Moses (Port Allegany) 84 yards and 2 TDs; Tad Hunter (Curwensville) 85 yards and the game winning TD against Everett; Tate Lindermuth (Brookville) 84 yards rushing.

  4. St. Marys 0-1
  5. Smethport 1-0
