The Redbank Valley Bulldogs advanced to the western Class 1A finals next week by beating the Cambridge Springs Blue Devils in convincing fashion on a calm and cold night at Meadville High School.  The 44-0 shutout was Redbank’s first of the year, although in 7 of their prior 12 games they’ve held their opponent to 9 points or less.  “We were happy to finally get the shutout,” stated Bulldog head coach Blane Gold, “credit to the jayvees, they were out there in that last drive.”

Caden Adams #50 and Brandon Ross #51 are an integral part of the Redbank defense. Both had numerous tackles on defense. Adams had a fumble recovery.

Redbank’s offense is not one-dimensional and it consists of a wide variety of contributors including the play of the offensive line.  Speed played a factor in this game also and the Bulldogs have some real burners in receivers Ashton Kahle and Mason Clouse.  Sophomore quarterback Braylon Wagner had a nice game coming back from an injury as he threw for 203 yards and 4 touchdowns.  He did throw a pair of picks though.  Teammate Caden Adams said to have Wagner back is, “amazing, it allows our team to be full strength and Jaxon Huffman (the back-up quarterback) on defense helps us to be an all-around better team.”

Redbank scored twice in the first period and that was all they would need to secure the win.  “We preach when we play teams like this, we have to get a two-score lead.  When we got that two-score lead, we were taking them out of their comfort zone (of running the ball),” said Coach Gold.  On the second play of their second possession, Redbank found the end zone when Wagner found a wide open Kahle for the 40-yard TD toss.  The Bulldogs scored again on their next drive by going 57 yards in 6 plays.  The highlight was a 40-yard Wagner to Clouse pass.  The touchdown was a one-yard run by Drew Byers.

Three more TDs were tacked on by RBV in the second stanza to invoke the Mercy Rule for the second half.  There was a 32-yard Wagner to Kahle touchdown pass, followed by a 57-yard TD pitch from Wagner to Clouse, and finally with 24 seconds left in the half Wagner threw a little swing pass to Byers who did the rest for the 10-yard score.

They added one last touchdown in the 4th quarter when Brock George scampered 15 yards to pay dirt the play after his nifty 52-yard run to the Blue Devil 15.  Those were George’s only two carries of the night totaling 67 yards.  Byers was the top rusher for either team as he had 83 yards on 16 carries.  Kahle caught 5 passes for 86 yards, while Clouse snagged 3 throws for 107 yards.

Cambridge Springs was outgained by Redbank 345 yards to 164.  Morgan Applebee led the Blue Devil offense with 107 passing yards, but he threw a couple of interceptions.  Brandon Hoover threw a third pick for the Blue Devils.  Clouse had two of those interceptions for Redbank and Carson Gould had the other.  Caden Adams recovered a fumble for Redbank.  Daniel Brown and Hoover had picks for Cambridge Springs.  Kahle returned a punt for a touchdown, but a roughing the punter penalty negated a 7th RBV touchdown.

Redbank Valley, now 12-1, will meet up with a very good Ft. Cherry team next week.  Ft. Cherry is 14-0 and has a dynamic sophomore quarterback too by the name of Matt Sieg.  Coach Gold said, “he’s a phenomenal athlete, very good quarterback.  He’s going to try to beat you with his legs, but he can make throws when he has to.”  Adams says he’s looking forward to the game, “One hundred percent.  Hope it’s a great game and we can pull it out.”

Redbank’s Mason Clouse #12 is the holder and Owen Clouse #21 is the kicker. Owen has made all but one of his extra points this year.

Cambridge Springs ended the year as District 10 champs with a record of 12-2.
