Redbank Valley overcame a 7-2 third-quarter deficit to earn a hard-fought 10-7 win over Union/A-C Valley Thursday night.

In a game that saw little offense and even fewer big plays, the Bulldogs made them when they had to.

“With the way our defense was playing, we felt one scored would win us the game,” said Redbank Valley head coach Blane Gould. “We didn’t anticipate them scoring first, but we knew if we could get the lead that we could control the game.”

Following a scoreless first quarter, Redbank broke the ice as a swarm of Bulldogs pulled down quarterback Tanner Merwin in the end zone for a safety.

Redbank looked as though they were going to take the lead a couple of drive prior. However, Gunner Mangaintini fumbled on a keeper inside the Falcon-Knights 10-yard line.

Union/AC-Valley had a chance to take the lead before halftime. Facing 4th-and-goal from the 5-yard line, they elected not to kick, and Merwin was tackled at the 3-yard line ending the half.

“We’ve been kicking all year,” said Union/A-C Valley head coach Brad Dittman. “I wish I had it back. Our kicker is good enough to make it from there. That was a bad call on my part.”

Union/A-C Valley would bounce back to begin the second half as Merwin completed passes of 33 and 28 yards to Karter Vogle. Vogle’s 28-yard reception gave the Falcon-Knights the lead early in the third quarter.

“We struggled to put it together this week,” said Dittman. “We had some kids step up, but we’ll bounce back.”

Redbank Valley responded with a touchdown drive of their own. Trenten Rupp hauled in a 24-yard touchdown from Mangaintini that put the Bulldogs up 10-7 with 4:34 to play in the third quarter.

From there, Redbank Valley battered and bruised Union/A-C Valley to the finish line as they upped their record to 3-0 on the season.

Mangaintini led Redbank Valley, going 11-for-17 for 78 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 27 yards on seven attempts.

The Falcon-Knights dropped to 3-1 on the season. Union/A-C Valley was led by Merwin, who completed 11-of-28 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown. Aiden Ortz added 44 yards on 14 carries.
