Farrell Steelers D10 (10-0) at Karns City Gremlins D9 (11-1)

PIAA 2A Round of Eight

The Farrell Steelers went into Friday nights game as big favorites despite playing on the road. The Steelers were averaging 53.4 points per game and giving up just 6.2 points per game. The Karns City Gremlins were hoping home field advantage and the elements would enable them to pull off the upset. The Gremlins held tough for almost three full quarters before falling in defeat 30 to 12.

It was a cold and snowy evening at Diehl Stadium. The snow covered field led to both teams playing smashed mouth football. Surprisingly both teams were also able to move the ball through the air.

Karns City started the game with the ball in Steelers territory after Zach Kelly’s big kickoff return to start the game. The Gremlins drove from the 49 to the 19, all on the ground before turning it over on downs at the 7:19 mark. The Gremins have two main rushers, Jayce Anderson and Luke Garing both 1000 yard rushers. Quarterback Eric Booher averages 8 passes per game.

The Steelers would now go on a nine minute drive in which they would get to the Gremlins 30.  On the drive were able to mix the run and the pass. The Steelers are led by Anthony Stallworth who averages over 200 yards a game rushing is a talented senior who can run over you or by you. The Steelers use two quarterbacks on offense, senior Trian Holden and sophomore Kabron Smith. They don’t throw a lot, but average over 100 yards a game with a 80% completion rate. The Steelers average over 17 yards a catch with Kylie Wilson and Omar Stewart being the main targets.

Stallworth would score from 30 yards out on the first play of the second quarter only to have it called back on a holding call. The Steelers were hurt all night by penalties. The drive stalled and they punted. The Steelers punt team committed two more penalties before they punted. Pinned deep, the Gremins went three and out .  Farrell starting their second drive at the Karns City 35, took two plays to score. On second and nine from the 34, Holden hit Stewart on a post pattern. Stewart caught the ball running right to left and was able to waltz into the end zone. Stallworth would run in the two point conversion and Farrell led 8-0. Karns City would go three and out again on their next possession and punt it back to Farrell. The Steelers would punt it right back to the Gremlins after a sack and personal foul penalty put them behind the chains. Karns City would go on a short drive before being stuffed on a fourth and two from the Steelers 40 with 1:22 to go in the half. The Steelers would commit the games first turnover on the next play. Holden was intercepted by defensive end Austin Brown who read the play and made a leaping pick.

Fifteen seconds later Booher hit Micah Rupp on a streak pattern. Rupp made a beautiful leaping one handed catch and raced into the end zone for a Gremlins touchdown. The snap was mishandled on the conversion and Farrell still led 8-6. The first half ended with Farrell in possession.

The Gremlins were hoping to keep the momentum going as the second half started. The Steelers let the opening kickoff roll between two returners and were hammered down at their own nine. But a big pass play by Smith and a big run by Stallworth flipped the field position. The drive continued to the Gremlins 21 where the Steelers faced fourth down. On fourth and one Stallworth went over left tackle almost untouched for a touchdown.

On the two point conversion Stallworth carried five Gremlins into the end zone and Farrell was up 16-6. Karns City didn’t quit, on their next possession they would use up six minutes of the clock driving from their own 37 to the Steelers 30. On fourth and 12, Booher threw incomplete.

It would take the Steelers 57 seconds to score again. Stallworth would be shaken up on the first play of the drive. After a holding call pushed Farrell back, they were facing a third and 22. Smith took the snap and scrambled to his right as Stewart raced pass the Gremlins secondary. Smith stopped and threw deep . Stewart catch the ball in stride and went 82 yards for the touchdown. A delay of game penalty on the conversion forced Farrell to thrown for it . The pass went incomplete and it was 22-6. The Steelers than tried an onside kick but it only went five yards and the Gremlins were in good field position. Two defensive offside penalties help the drive along as the third quarter ended. The Gremlins converted a fourth and one from the Steelers 22. The drive continued and Luke Cramer capped it with a six yard run over the right side. The two point conversion failed and the Gremlins still trailed by two scores.

Karns City lined up for an onside kick and recovered it. They had the ball in Steeler territory with ten minutes left. But on fourth and four a bad snap gave the ball back to Farrell in Gremlin territory. Farrell would drive to the Gremlin three yard line before fumbling in backwards. On fourth and seven from the Karns City nine, Stallworth has gang tackled short of the chains.  The Gremlins were 95 yards away with four and a half minutes to play. They picked up one first down before Dwight Allen intercepted a deflected pass on the left sideline and raced into the end zone.

Stallworth added the two pointer. The Gremmlins would drive inside the Steelers five before turning it over on downs with 30 seconds to go. The Steelers took a knee and it was over.
