The Tigers from Alexandria high school came into this one 2-1 with big hopes of improving to 3-1, while the Blackford Bruins came in 0-3 still looking for their first win of the 2021 tackle football season. In a game, I heard many around Scheumann Stadium was going to be a total mismatch I doubted that as I watch the teams warm up with neither really looking better than the other.
Carson Cuneo 6 yard touchdown catch put the Tigers up 6-0 with a little under 6:00 left in the opening quarter. If anyone expected the Bruins to shut down after again falling behind they were fast to be notified that this was not going to be the case when Bryan Hernandez raced 86 yards for a touchdown making this a 7-4 game at the 4:28 mark of the quarter.
Scott Winger a very sound back would give the Bruins a 14-6 lead with a 5-yard run. A short time later Gabe McGuire raced to a 53-yard score and just like this, we had ourselves a 14-12 game in the 2nd quarter.
Cueno put the Tigers up 18-14 with his 3-yard score. Alexandria would score again in the third on a 29-yard touchdown catch by McGuire.
Cueno along with McGuire are just Sophomore’s who are going to wreak havoc on the conference for 2 1/2 more seasons. Both play a solid game for younger players and both seem to show very good onfield smartness that will only get better the more they play.
Winger would show just how well he can pay with a 43-yard touchdown run to make this a 24-21 game. Winger is a senior that I believe if he wants will be playing college ball next season. Winger would put his team up 28-24 on a 9-yard run, with a little over 7:00 left in the contest.
Abram May on 4th and goal from the 15 catches a touchdown pass with 0:58 left to give the Tigers a hard-earned 31-28 victory.
