Arizona Spotlight: Tolleson v. Shadow Ridge

On Thursday night in suburban Phoenix, Tolleson celebrated their homecoming by hosting Shadow Ridge. Like a lot of major metropolitan areas in the country, Phoenix has a thriving sprawl of new high schools as the fingers of growth spread out into the desert. Tolleson, officially Tolleson Union, is part of the Tolleson Union School District, and now boasts seven high schools in and around Tolleson. Including Copper Canyon, La Joya, Sierra Linda, University, Westview, and West Point.

Meanwhile, their opponent hails from the northwest corner of the metro area. Based in Surprise, is part of Dysart Unified School District. Which includes three Surprise schools, and Dysart located in El Mirage. The other Surprise schools are Valley Vista and Willow Canyon.

At homecoming, two food vendors were brought in selling flavored ice and another selling some of the best chicken quesadillas among other southwestern fare.

The stadium, located just behind the high school is named in honor of Dr. Charles A. Landis, who was a native of Pennsylvania originally. He attended The Hill School in Pottsville, and also college at Gettysburg. He was Principal of Catskill Junior High and James Buchanan High School in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. Also, Superintendent of Windber Area High School. In 1978, he moved out west to Arizona and started as Superintendent of Tolleson Union High School. Where he held the post for 15 years before retiring. He passed away unexpectedly in January of 2021. The stadium then was named Dr. Charles A. Landis Stadium.

The field is beautiful, and sporting new turf. Previously, it was home to the Super Bowl XLIX grass that was the playing surface of the Seahawks and Patriots Super Bowl held in nearby Glendale.

It was quite warm at kickoff. Hovering just below 90F as the sun set.

In the first quarter, the teams traded touchdowns as Anthony Garcia started things with a 12 yard run by Shadow Ridge. While Demarion Postell answered with a 28 yard reception. Neither PAT was converted, and the two entered the second quarter knotted up at 6-6.

Garcia added two more scores, a 4 yard run and a 16 yard catch. Tolleson answered with a 16 yard pass with just eight seconds left in the half. A two point run was good, and Tolleson trailed just 20-14 at the break.

The third quarter saw Chase Whiteley take a 64 yard TD pass to the house, extending their lead to 27-14 with 4:58 left in the third. Bailey Watson scores on a short one yard run to make it 27-22. Giving the home team hopes of a victory.

But Anthony Garcia would get his fourth score of the day, an 11 yard touchdown run. And the scoring would be closed by Park Brooks snagging a 17 yard catch.
