Yesterday I made my first trip to Whetstone high school to watch the Braves play the bruins from Briggs high school. I first want to thank the pressbox guys for giving me A copy of the rosters, for both teams. This is the first time anyone from the City League had rosters that I could get. I also want to say what A good place this is to catch some high school football action. The stadium was well kept and it was easy to get into and easy to get out of.

Briggs got things started with their Ace David Downs picking up 20-yards just:19 seconds in. I have seen Briggs three times this season with Downs being the star of their show. In this one, he topped 100 yards rushing, had  A pick to go with nine tackles. Well, unofficially that is. Things started going downhill on the drive when Downs was plastered in the backfield by Zane Fent for A loss of four. A horrible snap on the punt sailed way over the head of Quintenn Loel, who ended up taking A loss back to his own 21-yard line. The Bruins defense kept the Braves off of the board on the ensuing drive mainly because Joren Clem just missed a 50-Yard kick.

Downs had his number called and he answered with A run of 15-yards. From there the Braves defense clamped down to quickly get the ball back to its offense. Things started off rocky because DarricMcClinton Jr. was thrown down for A loss of three by Jae’von Thomas. Thomas would atone for the loss when he took in A pass thrown by James Ferrell and gained 18-yards. Another 18-yard completion to Khristian Watkins-Sellers kept the Braves on the warpath. With 22.5 seconds left in the quarter, Thomas hit pay dirt from 2-yards out. Clem was true on his P.A.T. making this A 7-0 game.

The Brave offense was on the move again at the 8:51 mark of the 2nd quarter, when Sellers took in A pass for A 21-yard gain. The drive ended on A Clem 28-yard field goal to give us a 10-0 score. Downs would pick up 13-yards but the Bruins drive again went downhill quickly. Joshua Lacey would plow down Thomas for A loss of two. From there, A punt soon followed.  Darric McClinton Jr. picked up 19-yards to get the Braves train rolling with 2:49 left in the half but A play later Thomas put the ball on the ground and making the recovery for the Bruins was Thomas. The Braves defense quickly put the Bruins into A punting situation and again the snap sailed over Loel’s head Dean Raczkowski tapped him down on his own 17-yard line. McClinton Jr. went the distance on the next play to make this A 17-0 game. The half ended with Fent sacking Tajh Bowers.

The Braves had things going when Ferrell threw 23 yards and 13 yards to Keifer Young but Downs picked off the next pass and he would return it to the Braves 44-yard line.  Downs picked up 16-yards to get the ensuing drive going. Bowers ended the drive with A touchdown run from 21-yards out to make this A 17-6 game, with 8:15 remaining in the third.

Downs would stop the Braves ball carrier on third and one for A two-yard loss to force A punt. Briggs made two more nice plays before the quarter came to an end. He would pick up 20 more yards, then after the drive fizzled away he tackled Ferrell for A loss of four.

The Bruins offense would get A 19-yard run from Bowers to get things moving with 11:13 left in the game. Bowers would throw A dangerous pass one-minute later with the end result being A pick by Ismael Obas.  Obas again picked off Bowers at the 5:28 mark of the final quarter.  On the ensuing drive, the Brave would get A sensational 78-yard touchdown run from McClinton Jr. to make this A 24-6 game.

Bowers connected with Ryan Palmer for 58-yards with A little under 4:00 left in the game. Bowers ended the drive with A two-yard touchdown run, then he converted A two-point run making this a 24-14 game, which turned out to be the final. It looked like Sellers had A 78-yard pick-six but offsetting penalties took away the touchdown
