My Saturday afternoon game took me back to Columbus, Ohio for another Columbus City League tournament game that pitted the South Bulldogs traveling to Independence. with the winner moving on if my information is correct to fast Eastmoor.

The 76’ers started quickly when Orlando Jones went to his right to bust free for A big 58-yard gain that took the ball all the way to the Bulldogs 2-yard line, with 10:07 left on the clock. Jones finished off the drive with A the 2-yard score. A 2-pt conversion try failed leaving this A 6-0 game.

The rest of the quarter was filled with sloppy play, penalties, and a lot of defense in between. Antonio Harris got to the Bulldogs quarterback, Ronmel Robinson for A short loss. Then the Bulldogs defense sounded off with Jerome Dillard crushed Jones on A big hit holding the talented runner to zero yards. From there Jones put the ball on the ground and coming up for it for the Bulldogs was Keivontah Petty. The 76’ers defense stepped up with Robin Briggs taking Robinson down for A 2-yard loss. Then it was back to the Bulldogs defense coming up big when Aries Pradier took the ball away from the South runner then he made a nice little run before being tackled. The last defensive play that stood out in the quarter came from Dontae Porter who took Robinson down for A short loss.

Robinson finally got the South offense moving with A 10-yard pass to Jerome Dillard to move the chains on A fourth and six play. The drive dried out like A hot desert day putting the Independence offense back on the field. Jalin Sample went left to pick up 23-yards on A sweet run. Jones looked to have A 58-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Munnerlyn but A holding penalty took away the score. This game seemed to have more penalties and turnover combine than points scored, by the time it ended. Jones would go right back to Munnerlyn, who made the catch for what would have been a long gain but he fumbled the ball and Dillard recovered it for the Bulldogs. In the final 2:47 seconds of the quarter, the teams seemed to trade turnovers, Munnerlyn put the ball on the ground, and when the pile was unstacked the refs signaled first down Bulldogs. Jones looked to have A pick on A Robinson pass but defensive holding was called to take away the pick. The Bulldogs offense showed A glimpse of life when Robinson hit Dillard for 13-yards. A sack by Munnerlyn ended the half.

Independence came out firing on all cylinders to start the third. Jones scrambled to A 14-yard gain that took the ball down to the Bulldogs five. From there he powered his way into the end zone for the touchdown. He then converted A 2-point conversion run to give the 76’ers the 14-0 lead. With 5:30 left on the clock, Jones threw to Vontez Brice, who made A 40-yard juggling catch. Jones then picked up 22-yards on a nice run. this became A 20-0 game when Sample wiggled in from 3-yards out, with 3″11 left in the third. The teams traded fumbles before the third ended. Robinson fumbled the ball away to Munnerlyn then Sample fumbled the ball away to Donovan King.

The fourth quarter was scoreless but entertaining in A defensive kind of way. Robinson would be sacked by Munnerlyn to get things underway. Jabari Harris got to Sample for A 2-yard loss. Sample would later fumble the ball with Delquan Rodgers making the recovery for the Bulldogs. Another sack on Robinson this time by Rodgers happened with 8:19 left. Shemar Lindsey picked off Jones to give the Bulldogs offense another shot but any hopes of anything coming from it ended when Michael Johnson sacked Robinson. The game would end with the same 20-0 score.
