Last night I made another drive to Cincinnati to catch the game between Williamsburg and Gamble Montessori, at the new Stargel Stadium and I have to say the stadium itself was worth the drive. Before I get to the game I want to thank the PA guy and clock keeper for the rosters for both teams and as promised I am including what a nice job you guys did. I also wanted to say after covering Gamble three times, it was great to meet Coach Robert Rachel. I wanted to say how classy you were for talking to me after A tough loss.
The Gators defense made the games first big play, with Jerimiah Neblett recovering a fumble by Williamsburg, with only 1:52 seconds going off of the clock. The Gators known for their super tight formations would slowly work the ball down to the Wildcats 13-yard line, only to see themselves in A fourth and fourteen situation. Electing to go for it the Gators called on Neblett, who responded with A 12-yard touchdown run. Eli Norris would miss the P.A.T. to keep this A 6-0 game, with 5:19 left in the quarter. The Wildcats offense would respond with A 34-yard run from Trystan Gries on A quarterback keeper. The Gators defense would get A nice play from Gary Reece who got to Trent Bocks for a loss of three.
The 2nd quarter would see the Wildcats end A 10-play, 65-yard drive, when Gries scored from 14-yards out to make this A 6-6 game, with 11:56 left in the half. At the 7:30 mark of the quarter, Trent Kellerman of the Wildcats got to Devonte Underwood for A 2-yard loss. The Gators offense would convert A fourth and two when Marco Brown bullied his way past the chains. Just:35 seconds later the Wildcats defense would get A sack on Underwood when Andrew Hatter and Garrett Mason teamed up to get the speedy quarterback. At the 3:25 mark, the Wildcats Shawn Drake and Dylan Rowland teamed up to stop Neblett for A loss of 4-yards and bring up fourth and sixteen for the Gators on the Wildcats twenty-five. The Gators once again elected to go for it and again this decision was golden thanks to Underwood finding Marco Brown for the touchdown. After North made the P.A.T. we had A 13-6 game. The Wildcats answered on the ensuing drive, with Gries finding Braden Kelley for the 53-yard touchdown. Mason Thomas locked this one up at 13, with his P.A.T.
The last 2:26 seconds of the half was all defense. Skyler Gries would make two fantastic plays. He first sacked Underwood for A loss of seven, then he crushed Greyson Peters after A bad snap on A punt, for A loss of 8-yards. Peters would get some sweet revenge when he got to Thomas for A loss of six. Then the Gators Neblett picked off A Trystan Gries pass.
With 6:29 remaining in the fast-moving third quarter Trent Fields stopped Underwood on A fourth and four play just short of the chains.
On the ensuing drive, the Wildcats would get A sweet 16-yard run from Trystan Gries. From there Thomas picked up 14-yards on another fine run. The 9-play, 91-yard drive came to an end when Thomas raced to A 28-yard score. The P.A.T. would make this A 20-13 Wildcats lead.
Midway through the final frame, Jalen Fairbanks was tackled for A 2-yard loss by the Wildcats Kellerman. With 4:38 remaining in the contest, the Gators were facing A fourth and two, and staying with the theme they elected to go for it. Hatter turned this try into A nightmare when he stopped Neblett just short of the chains. The Wildcats were trying to run out the last 4:38 seconds of the game but Trystan Gries laid the ball on the turf and pouncing on it was Madou Nimaga. I am telling you this 5-8, 145-pound Freshman is A future star for the Gators. He had his name called over the P.A. System multiple times in this game. With 1:41 left the Gators would convert A fourth and four from the Wildcats 38-yard line, when Underwood was forced to run when he could not find anyone opened, so he took off and picked up 6-yards. Forty seconds later Neblett broke A tackle and came out of the pack alone to race 32-yards to make this A 20-19 game. After A timeout the Gators went for two and the win. Thomas and Evan Hall got to Underwood and stop him short of the goal line to preserve to Wildcats win.
