Last night covid played a part in my game selection and I wound up going ba to Mifflin high school to cover the Mifflin hosting Whetston game. Both teams came in winless on the 2021 season so I figured both teams would be playing a little harder thinking that this was a good chance to pick up their first win.
Anthony Thomas would hook up with Derrick Bass to give the Wentstone Braves a big 24-yard gain just fourteen seconds into the game. A little over one minute late Thomas connected with Rickey Godfrey III for a 12-yard gain to the Punchers 4-yard line. The drive would result in a 23-yard field goal from Kiefer Young to make this a 3-0 Braves lead, with 9:18 left in the opening quarter.

The rest of the quarter would see both teams have some flags thrown against them and some nice defensive plays with the biggest offensive play being a 30-yard run on a nice option play by the Braves with Tylee Johnson carrying the rock.

With 10:07 left in the half, the Punchers were forced to punt on the play and the ball sailed about two feet over the punter’s head resulting in a safety making this a 5-0 game. On the ensuing drive, Thomas was sacked by Braylan Duerson for a loss of 7-yards. That play led to a put by the Braves where Dean Raczkowski laid the wood to Tyreese Allison, who somehow held onto the ball. The Braves defense would come up big with a little under 7:00 left in the half when Raczkowski picked off Joshua Burgess and raced into the end zone making this an 11-0 game.

Burgess would scramble for a 21-yard gain to give the Punchers some momentum to start the third quarter. The drive ended without any points being scored thanks to Austin Hess stopping Braylen Duerson on fourth and one, with 8;16 left on the clock. The Braves appeared to take a 17-0 lead when Aidan Wilichchowski shot off like a rocket for a 67-yard touchdown but a hold negated the play. Thomas would scramble like Kenny Stabler and throw a strike on the run to Kiefer Young that picked up 30-yards. The Punchers defense recovered and shortly had its offense back on the field. Maurice Carreker would pick up 25-yards on a nice pass play and then Burgess used his feet to go 12-yards for the Punchers touchdown to make this an 11-6 game, which also would be our final score.

The fourth quarter even with no scoring still brought some good plays for the crowd of roughly 300 to see. Wilichchowski would pick up a sack. Then the Braves would keep their drive alive when Thomas threw to Young for a gain of three to convert a third and two. Antonio Ramos would get a sack for the Punchers, then with a little over four minutes to go the biggest play of the final frame came with Teneko Harvey to give the Punchers one last chance to eke out the win.
On the ensuing drive, Burgess threw a perfect pass in the direction of Tyreese Allison, who was all alone needing only to catch the ball to score the winning touchdown, the ball hit him in stride but the receiver was unable to bring it in. On fourth and fifteenth Burgess scrambled around then took off downfield picking up the first down all the way to the Braves 25-yard line. With 2:30 left Burgess would be picked off in the endzone by Damarion McClinton to secure the first win of the season for the Braves.
