Yesterday my football started as poorly as it could have. I make the drive to Cleveland to watch the Lincoln West at John F. Kennedy, at Roye Kidd stadium only to find out by a lady putting things away at the stadium, that West had just called to forfeit the game. So I get in my car and call head to who knows where to catch a night game. After talking to my good friend and fellow football fan Sykotyk, I took his advice and wasted three hours and kept to my plan to watch Norton at Cloverleaf. Cloverleaf is a place I have been wanting to see for 23 years, but had never fit it into my plans.
This was a fast paced game, with both teams getting just three possessions in the first half and then three each in the 2nd half also, if you do not count the final possession for Cloverleaf that consisted of Brody Stallings taking a knee to allow the clock run out. Norton would get a nice catch for a first down by Conner Hray, the 2nd first down on the drive, then Nathan Merrill picked up 18 yards to move the chains, for the third time in the drive. The promising drive ended on the Colts 2 yard line, after Merrill was stopped at the 2 yard line, on a fourth and four attempt.
The Colts thanks to a sensational job from its offensive line got a 25 yard run from Emilio Rivera, who broke a weak tackle attempt on his way to the big gain. With just 19.5 seconds left in the quarter, Stallings picked up four yards to move the chains and keep things going for the Colts offense. Stallings would cap off the 98 yard drive that took 13 plays, by going 16 yards for the score. Logan Tierney would nail the 25 yard PAT to make this a 7-0 game just seven seconds into the 2nd quarter.
Larry Harper would scramble out of a mess and end up picking up 30 yards and another Panthers first down, with 10:48 left in the half. Harper would hit Merrill for a 10 yard score, then Alex Dillon locked things up at seven, with his PAT. Brady Postek would recover a Colts fumble with 3:58 left in the half, but a sack by Preston Gregoire on Harper would end any hopes that the Panthers had at cashes in the fumble. #7 (Not on any of the rosters I found online) from Cloverleaf just missed a 47 yard field goal right before the half came to a close and this would remain a seven all game.
Norton would eat up most of the clock in the third with a 16 play, 95 yard drive that brought 15 running plays and just one pass. I believe three different players ran the ball during the drive, with Cincinnati Bearcat recruit Tyler Scott scoring from 3 yards out. The PAT would be good to increase the lead to 14-7. The quarter would bring a 58 yard run by John Manzuk to give Cloverleaf the momentum heading into the final frame. The Colts would take a total of 9 plays to lock this one up at fourteen, with Stallings from a yard out, with 9:32 left in this tight contest.
The Colts defense would continue to pounce on the Panthers offense holding Scott and company without a point in the final quarter and allowing their offense the opportunity after opportunity to win the game. With 4:35 left the Colts got an innocent 10 yard run from Stallings to pick up a first down. Then, with 4:05 left Stalling moved the chains again with a gain of eleven. Facing a fourth an one at the Panthers 12 yard line, the Colts coaching staff elected to go for it and that decision was gold, after Rivera bulled his way to a 5 yard gain, with 1;45 left. From there just twenty five seconds later Stalling used some nice work from his offensive line to go the final 8 yards for the score. The PAT gave the Colts the 21-14 lead. The defense took it from there, with the cherry on the cake being a stoppage on Scott on fourth down.
