The first day of high school football in America has come and gone. But not without some troubles.
The opening game of the season was part of a doubleheader for the Corky Kell-Dave Hunter Classic taking place at Kell High School’s Carlton J. Kell Stadium in suburban Marietta. Kicking off at 4:30pm on a Wednesday afternoon, the start of the game between Calloway and Prince Avenue Christian was a good one. With Calloway with a surprising, slim lead, 17-14 going into halftime when the first of two lightning delays happened.
After thirty minutes, the two squads returned to a monsoon and played just over five minutes of game time before another, even longer lightning delay took them back off the field. Over an hour later, the teams returned and Prince Avenue Christian ran away with it, winning 40-17.
Originally scheduled to start around 8pm, the homestanding Kell Longhorns game against the South Paulding Spartans didn’t start until nearly 9:30pm. But the Longhorns didn’t wait around long. In mid-season form, the Horns went quickly with two scores, both by Moonie Gipson.
After Canyon Carter’s blazing 96 yard kickoff return, Kell didn’t look back. Going up 44-7 on the leg of Fernando Tavares’ 30 yard field goal late in the third quarter. Despite two Kade Wigginton touchdowns by South Paulding, the result was secured. Kell wins the opener, 44-21.
