Last night I made my way for the first time to Franklin, Ohio to watch the Thursday Night Lights game, that featured the hometown Franklin Wildcats battle the Bellbrook Golden Eagles. Both teams entered at 3-1, with both showing strong defenses. That theme would hold true to for especially in the first half, where both defenses took turns pulverizing the offenses they faced. After one half of play the two teams had combined to run 48 [plays and gain a total of 94 yards. The Wildcats only had 24 of those yards.
Bellbrook would use a nice reception by Seth Borondy to set up a one yard touchdown run by Jonah Atchison to make this a 6-0 game. The PAT was successful off of the foot of Taylor Jordan to increase the Golden Eagles lead to 7-0. The drive was set up by a long kickoff return by Mitchell Brittain deep inside Franklin territory .
Franklin would counter with a long gain on a nice catch by Cyre Williams, who looked to have fumbled the ball, but the refs declared he was down to keep the ball with the Wildcats. That decision led to Gage Johnson blasting in like a rocket, from 5 yards out. The PAT from Bryan Thacker locked this one up at seven. The third quarter would end with the same score and setting up a very entertaining fourth quarter.
Gage Johnson had shown is power on his 5 yard scoring run, that showcased his strong offensive line. With 10:07 left in the game, he would see a little opening and sprint for a 80 yard score as he showed his speed on the run. The PAT would give the Wildcats a 14-7 lead. Bellbrook would get a long run of their own by Borondy, that gave them a 1st and ten at the Franklin 15 yard line, with 7:00 left. Atchison would haul in a a 10 yard touchdown pass from Alex Westbrock. The PAT out of the hold of Ian Mccarty and off of the foot of Jordan locked this one at fourteen. The final 3:08 would have three nice plays, with the last one being the biggest. First, Davis Hagler sacked Wildcats quarterback Braden Woods, then there was a nice catch by Ryan Russell, The biggest of the three came with :29 seconds left when Thacker attempted a game winning field goal from 56 yards out, a distance he had shown during warm ups was well within his range. The kick was boomed off the foot, but came up well short because Braeden Gedeon got a hand on the ball,to keep the score locked at fourteen and force overtime.
In Overtime Dylan Dirks ran a good slant route and the pass hit him in stride in the end zone for what turned into the game winning score. The Pat would make it a 21-14 game. In their overtime drive Bellbrook would lose 11 yards, in a large part due to a sack from Pierce Bauerle,
