Yesterday afternoon Lima Central Catholic (2-1) invaded Mogadore (3-0) in a battle of division six teams. Both teams are very stout for small and both possess some big time weapons. For L.C.C. they have what might be the most dangerous one-two punch in all of division six, in Rossi Moore and Shaun Thomas. For Mogadore they have a 6-4, 195 pound stud receiver/defensive back in Nathan Stephenson. I.M.O. what turned out as the difference in this game was that L.C.C. used their two biggest weapons often, while Mogadore waited until late in the game to get their stud involved.
Mogadore started things out very well on defense with Zach Shannon and Billy Baker said hello to Thomas, with a thunderous hit that resulted in four yard loss. This was followed by a pick by Nathan Fisher picked off a Nevan Stolly pass that bounced off the hands of Thomas. Thomas would easily shake off those two plays and go on and have another solid game, as all great players do. He would cap off a 12 play, 97 yard drive, with a 11 yard touchdown run that put his team up 7-0 after Nathan Davisson was true on his PAT. A pick by Joey Rinehart on a Will Popa pass gave the Thunderbirds the ball back again with 38.8 seconds left in the quarter.
The Thunderbirds got a Dwayne Haskins like pass from Stolly to Nathan Stolly for a 69 yard score. The ball hit Stolly in stride as he sprinted wide opened downfield making the play look as easy as it did in the old NCAA play station football games. The PAT gave L.C.C. a 14-0 lead that they never relinquished. Thomas would make a leaping like Randy Moss catch for a 37 yard game, and then a 29 and 22 yard run by Moore set up a 2 yard touchdown run by? You guessed it Moore. The PAT made this a 21-0 game and made the large Mogadore crowd sat quietly in shock. The L.C.C. defense ended the half with two nice plays. First, it was Rinehart sacking Popa to force a 4th and six situtation, this was followed by a pick by Moore on a Popa pass.
Popa would hit Stephenson for a 17 yard gain, when the Wildcats were facing a 3rd and 17 situation. That was followed up by a Popa pass to Tucker Marmash for a 3 yard score, after Grant Slabaugh made good on the PAT the scoreboard read 21-7. Mogadore would get the last big play of the third, when Moore coughed up the ball and Nathan Fisher came away with it.
Thomas picked off Popa with 10:38 left in the game, but the Wildcats defense stood tall and soon had their offense back on the field. Tave Constantine would dash 42 yards for the Mogadore score. After a flag was thrown on L.C.C., the Wildcats opted to go for two, that choice turned out to be bad because the play was stopped short of the end zone to leave this a 21-13 game. Thomas would make like Emmitt Smith and wow the crowd with a game clinching 20 yard run for a score to make this a 27-13 game. The Wildcats would end the scoring on a Popa to Stephenson 9 yard touchdown pass and a two point conversion pass from Popa to Tucker Marmash to make the final score 27-21.
