Friday night at Bill Ed Leedy Field the hometown Lincoln County Patriots prepared to battle the Woodford County Yellow Jackets team.
As with the beginning of each high school tackle football season, both squads were hoping to get off to a fast start by starting the season 1-0. As I watched the teams warming up, I noticed that the crowd on the visitors side was very small but already vocal. The home team side, where I was setting was pretty full but a shade lighter than the previous two Death Valley Bowl games I had taken in.
Defense ruled the opening period with three plays sticking out to me the most. The first came at the 8:28 mark, with Nick Harris, who was listed as a wide receiver on the roster, but played quarterback in this one, was sacked by Rodrell Dryden and Jackson Giler, for a nine yard loss. After that, with 5:56 left in the quarter Yellow Jackets quarterback, Bryce Jackson was picked off by Dylan Burchfield. Then the final play came with 5:00left on the clock with Harris getting sacked by JD Alexander.

Lincoln County would find the end zone, when defensive lineman Levi Daugherty found the ball in his hands after a fumble and the big guy rumbled and stumbled his way for a seventy nine yard touchdown. The point after kickoff of the foot of #25 was true to make this a 7-0 game, with 11:00 left in the half. The Lincoln County defense would recover another fumble just eight seconds later on a bad pitch on an option play. Making the recovery was Rafe Shelton at the Yellow Jackets sixteen. Harris would connect with Troy Gowins twice on the drive, with the 2nd completion going for a nine yard score. The point after kick made this a 14-0 game, with 6:28 left in the half. From that point on the defenses would stand tall and keep both offenses off of the board.

The Yellow Jackets would light up the scoreboard, when Patterson found Skyelar Johnson wide opened for a sixty one yard score. Joey Whitehead added the point after kick to make this a 14-7 game, with 10:03 left in the third. Defense ruled the rest of the third, with three nice plays highlighting things. First, there was an interception by the Yellow Jackets Cory Walton, at the 8:26 mark. Jacob Napier would sack Patterson as the Patriots defense continued to find ways into the Yellow Jackets backfield. The final play was another sack by the Patriots with Cody Miracle doing the honors.

The final frame would see two scores and two nice plays from the Yellow Jackets. The first score made this a 21-7 game with Harris hitting Zack Hazlett on a sixty four yard pass. Woodford County made it a 21-14 game, on a one yard quarterback sneak by Patterson. Giler would make a stop for a two yard loss, with 2:37 left and then with 1:53 left Harris was stopped by Coy Hayes and Jeremiah Shulze.
