Maple Heights Drops Shaw, 20-0
September 19, 2020
Shaw Cardinals v. Maple Heights Mustangs
Sparky DiBiasio Stadium, Euclid, OH
On a crisp fall afternoon, the Shaw Cardinals of East Cleveland hosted the Maple Heights Mustangs at Euclid’s Sparky DiBiasio Stadium. The game played at Euclid’s older stadium on campus between the two Lake Erie League schools.
Shaw looked to get on the board first, just 2:31 into the game, attempting a 42-yard field goal. It was no good, and after that Maple Heights methodically, but slowly, would move down the field in spurts to score. Scoring the first touchdown late in the first, on a 21-yard TD pass, failing to convert the run. In the second quarter, the Mustangs added a 4-yard TD run, also failing to convert the pass, to lead 12-0 at intermission.
In the third quarter, Maple Heights opened up the passing game more, but faltered thanks to a stiff Shaw defensive unit keeping them out of the endzone. But midway through the fourth quarter, Maple Heights did tack on one final touchdown, a 14-yard TD run and converted the pass to take a 20 to nothing lead and would hold on to it late in the game despite a few final tense moments when Shaw would have the ball. Miscues and a stingy Mustang defense kept them off the scoreboard down the stretch to secure the shutout.
