Last night I made my way to Washington Courthouse, Ohio to catch the rivalry game between visiting Washington Courthouse and the home team Miami Trace. Washington came in supporting a 5-4 record, while Miami Trace came in with a 6-3 record. This was game number 59 for me this year and when it was all said and done, this would be my best game of the season, with two games left tomorrow I am willing to bet it will remain that way. By the time all was said and done there would be unofficially 1,038 yards gained in this one, with 73 points scored.
Miami trace would start their first drive on the Washington 38 yard line thanks to a big kickoff return by Josh Gilmore. The Panthers would have to convert a 4th and three to keep the drive alive and they did just that thanks to a nice run by Dalton Mayer, from there Mayer would be picked off by Trevaughn Jackson, who took off up field only to lose the ball to Josh Gilmore to give the Panthers a first down, with 9:30 left in the wild opening quarter. With new life the Panthers would make good by scoring on a 24 yard catch by Gilmore. Gilmore had a drop earlier during the first drive, so this was a make up, payback catch for him. The PAT by Justin Shoemaker made this a 7-0 game, with 8:36 showing on the clock. Shoemaker has a very, very strong leg and I am guessing he will be kicking somewhere on Saturday’s next year.

Courthouse would answer the score by going 86 yards in 6 plays to make this a 7-6 game. The score came on a 36 yard run by one of the best players I have seen play this year Jamie McCane. The PAT try by Grant Kuhlwein was blocked, so this one remained a one point game, with 6:04 left on the clock. The Blue Lions defense would get its second pick of the game, when Miguel O’Flaherty came down with the pass thrown by Mayer. The ensuing drive fizzled out rather quickly and seem to give the Panthers team another boost in energy, that the offense turned into a 5 play 59 yard scoring drive, with the last 46 coming on a fine run by Mayer. The PAT would make this a14-6 game, with 0:42 seconds showing on the clock.

The 2nd quarter would see Mccane pick up 22 yards on another of his fine runs. Later he would score from 23 yards out on yet another nice run. A two point pass attempt failed, leaving this a 14-12 game. Sandwiched between those two plays was a nice defensive play by the Panthers Austin Conklin, who knocked away a pass thrown by Ethan Rogers-Wright. The two teams would head to the locker room with just two points separating them. The first half had produced a very entertaining 24 minutes, but nothing close to what the final 24 would bring to the large loud crowd.

The third quarter was owned by the Panthers, but first the Blue Lions would get a 43 yard catch from McCane, who was tripled teamed leaped high into the air to make the catch. The Panthers defense rebounded very quickly and kept the Blue Lions off of the scoreboard. Jayden LeBeau, a very talented Sophomore would 66 total yards with back to back runs. The 3 play, 89 yard drive came to a close on a 27 yard touchdown catch by Matthew Haddox to make this 20-12 game, with 7:15 left in the third. A fumble on the ensuing kickoff was recovered by the Panthers Austin Carpenter. Carpenter would grab a nicely thrown ball from Mayer for a 18 yard gain, that set up a 27 yard field goal by Shoemaker to make this a 23-12 game, with 5:45 left on the clock. A pick by Andrew Amore set up the next Panthers score and that was on a 9 yard catch by Gilmore, after the PAT the home team had a 30-12 lead, with 1;12 left in the quarter.

The final frame was dominated by the Blue Lions in a way that left many of the Panthers fans speechless and many more just sat there with a confused look on their face, while others just walked away shaking their heads. Wright would scramble around to avoid being sacked and then threw a strike to Eli Lynch, who raced away for a 56 yard touchdown. A two point conversion pass from Wright to Jerome Mack made this a 30-20 game, with 11:41 left. Brandon Cubbage would recover a Panthers fumble that occurred on a mishandled quarterback to running back exchange just ten seconds after the Lynch score. McCane would break a weak tackle attempt to pick up 26 yards. That was shortly followed by a Wright to Lynch pass for a 22 yard touchdown to make this a 30-26 game, with 10:18 left. After a Panthers punt that pinned the Blue Lions back on their 9 yard line Wright would hit Calum Brown in stride for a 78 yard touchdown after the PAT the Blue Lions had a 33-30 lead, with 8:04 left. With 5:58 left to play the Panthers were lined up to punt again, but Mayer took the snap and sprinted up field for a 34 yard gain all the way to the Blue Lions 20 yard line. The Blue Lions defense would allow just a 20 yard field goal by Shoemaker that locked this one up at 33, with 3:32 left. The Blue Lions had used 6 plays to move the ball to the Panthers 8 yard line and from there it would be the PAFOOTBALLNEWS.COM player of the game Jamie Mccane going the final 8 for the game winning score. The final point of the game came on the PAT kick by Grant Kuhlwein, that made this a 40-33 game with 0:47 seconds left. The Panthers last hope for a tying score ended when Garitt Leisure picked off a Mayer pass in the end zone.
