Another Friday night is in the books and I have to say for personally, it was a very hard night as a fan. The matchup I took in tonight was a battle between Newark Catholic and Paint Valley. For those who know me Newark Catholic is my favorite team in the state and Paint Valley has my favorite coach in the state also a man that I am proud to be able to call my friend. As I told coach Mitchell, coach Cooper and my friend, coach Hollon this is the one matchup I have to sit quietly through and just watch because I can’t vote for or against either team. Coach Cooper told me after the game that he was surprised to see me sitting on the home side. He figured I be standing by a tree all by myself. OK enough about me and my agony its time to talk about the game.

Paint Valley would cap off a 7 play 70 yard drive, with Bryce Newland throwing a pretty pass to the multi talented Cruz McFadden, for a 18 yard score. The point after was nailed by Jackson Williams to make this a 7-0 contest, with 6:08 left in the opening quarter. On the ensuing kickoff Tristan Gorius used some nice blocking along with a little patient to take the ball to the Bearcats 48 yard line At the 5:03 mark Matt Carlisle, the Newark Catholic quarterback was forced to run and he would a heavy price for doing so, when Cordell Grubb blasted him, holding the play to a 2 yard gain. Facing a fourth and four the Green Wave opted to go for it, that decision was made out to be a bad one, when Carlisle was held up by Brayden Ison long enough for his teammates to make a gang tackle forcing Carlisle to come up short of the yard marker and gave the Bearcats the ball back. The last big play in the quarter came when big bad Nate Williams sacked Newland for a loss of 8 yards.

With the Bearcats pinned down on their own 9 yard line, a simple run play was called with Ison getting the handoff from Newland
Ison would break a tackle and then fly 91 yards for another Paint Valley score. A bad snap on the PAT would keep this a 13-0 game. with 9:22 left in the half. After Dane Miller broke up a pass to keep the Green Wave off the scoreboard Carlisle would throw another pass, with the result being a catch by Slater Evans for a touchdown. Ryan Auer connected on the PAT to make this a 13-7 game, with 8:11 left in the half. The Bearcats added one final score in the half, when Lane Mettler eased in from about 3 yards out. Mettler was stopped a yard short on the two point conversion leaving this a 19-7 game.

Newland made like Roger “Captain America” Staubach,w hen he threw a beautiful ball to McFadden for a gain of 38 yards. Newland did his best Jared ” The Hefty Lefty” Lorenzen impression, when he used his 6-4 215 pound frame to shake off a few would be tacklers to take the ball down to the Newark Catholic 10 yard line. From there Mettler would plow his way in from a yard out to make this a 25-7 game, with 7:55 left in the third quarter. In the final 4:46 of the quarter both teams would add a score. For Newark Catholic Carlisle connected with Evans, who broke a tackle to score from 32-yards out. Carlisle was as impressive as any quarterback I have seen this year from Ohio would unofficially complete 17-29 passes for 3 touchdowns. He showed poise in the pocket with his passes being right on the money, with a soft angel like touch to them. The PAT made this a 25-14 game. Paint Valley got a safety to make it 27-14, when Tramel Byrd sacked Carlisle.

Newark Catholic came into this contest after a disheartening loss to Academy in a game the Green Wave had three turnovers. Tonight their offense played much better because there were no turnovers in this one for them. After losing that game by eight, a game they could have and some may say should have won, coupled with being down 13 points as they entered the fourth quarter, they could have easily gone through the motions waiting for this game to end and accept defeat. Those young men who dressed in green are not built like that, which led them to come out throwing hay makers, that ended with a Carlisle 60 yard touchdown pass to Derek Hawk. The pass was spot on allowing the wide opened Hawk to easily catch it and score. The PAT closed the paint Valley lead to 27-21. The Bearcats as you read in my game summary last week was neck and neck with a bigger, stronger faster Marion Pleasant, team last with for 2 1/2 quarters before falling 43-21. Many of teams might have thought, oh no here we go again, but the Bearcats coaching staff would never allow their players to let a thought like that creep into their minds and that helped set up 9 play, 64 game clinching score, with the drive ending with a Newland finding McFadden for a 29 yard score, on third and seventeen, making this a 33-21 game, with 2:55 left. The Bearcats cemented the win, with a sack on Carlisle by Cordell Grube and Mettler.

UNOFFICIAL STATS
Newark Catholic
58 plays, 321 yards
Passing 17-29 3 td’s

Paint Valley
57 plays, 387 yards
Passing 11-14 1 TD

I wanted to say before ending this it was great to meet coach Cooper and his wife and to have a long conversation after the game with him. Also it was good to catch up with coach Mitchell, after missing him last week and as always talking to Pete is always a pleasure for me.
