On Friday night I traveled to Fredonia, New York to take in my first high school football game, with my good friend Sykotyk and only person that I know who sees more football than I do. The two teams playing were host Fredonia and Portville. The game was big because the winner got to host in the playoffs. The ticket price was only two dollars, but most were able to get in free because of a parade before the game and the programs were free too. O.H.S.A.A. did you read that? The crowd was big for small schools and they were extremely loud and very knowledgeable.

Dom Gullo would start the Hillbilly drive with a fine 13 yard run, but it would be the Portville defense, who got the last laugh when the right side of the defensive line stopped Dom Gullo on a fourth and one try. Defense ruled most of the night and this was the case on the first Panther drive, at least for the first three plays. Then on fourth and four from the Hillbilly 30 yard line Jayden Lassiter , a stud running back showed off some of his Emerson Boozer like skills by torching the defense for a touchdown. The PAT off of the strong foot of Alex Wenke made this a 7-0 game, with 3:36 left in the fast paced opening quarter.

With 10:9 left in the half the Panthers set up in punt formation deep in their own territory and then they pulled off a near perfect fake punt, with Hunter Griffin throwing to a wide opened Blake George for a 47 yard gain. Hats off to the coaching staff for calling that play and then having the confidence in their players to execute it. The drive would last for 15 plays and total 84 yards, with the ending being a 1 yard run by Lassiter. The PAT kick hit the left upright and deflected off to keep this a 13-0 game, with 4:26 left in the half. The Panthers would make this a 20-0 game, when Lassiter found pay dirt again from 43 yards out and the PAT kick was good by Wenke.

The third quarter would see just one score by the home team, on a 5 yard run by Jake Skinner. A two point pass try failed leaving this a 20-6 game. Without any time running off of the clock Fredonia would recover the onside kick allowing their offense another shot at making this a closer game. The person running the score clock wasn’t the only one having an off night because the refs totally missed when they called fourth down, when everyone in the stands including the P.A. guy was calling third down and it was.

The fourth quarter did not produce any points, but did give us four exciting plays. First there was a 35 yard catch in tight coverage by Dalton Tobola. Then Lassiter picked up 15 yards on a run that he showed some nice power by braking a tackle or two. Fredonia had a nice moment with Skinner gaining 48 yards on a nice run after a better catch. The game was sealed when Blake George of Portville picked off a Hillbilly pass.
