Last night I made my first drive ever to Springfield high school to catch a football game. The game featured the Springfield Wildcats hosting Centerville Elks. Springfield entered with a 6-1 record and on a five game winning streak, while Centerville had won four of their last five to move their record to 4-3. The first big play of the game came with 5:27 left and it was a 40 plus yard run by the Wildcats Te’Sean Smoot all the way to the Elks 6 yard line. Ramey would end the 9 play, 51 yard drive with a 1 yard plunge into the end Zone, with 4:43 left. The point after was blasted over the crossbar by #29 Trevor Crockran to make this a 7-0 game. After quickly shutting down the Elks offense the Wildcats would need just 5 plays to go 46 yards, with the scoring play coming on a 13 yard pass from Smoot to Larry Stephens. The PAT was true to make this a 14-0 game, with 1:18 left in the opening quarter. With just 00.3 seconds left in the quarter the Wildcats would score again, with Jeff Tolliver acting like Keith Byers by rumbling into the end zone from 52 yards out. The PAT was blocked by Noah Holmes to keep this a 20-0 game.

The second quarter was going by at a nice pace without any scoring. For Centerville the quarter was much like the first one, with Chase Harrison throwing some Jim Hart like passes only to see his receivers drop pass after pass. I believe by the time this game was over, the Elks receivers had nine drops. With 5:21 left in the half Smoot dropped back and threw a perfect pass hitting Stephens in stride for a 72 yard score. The PAT was good to make this a 27-0 game. The Elks would get a 20 yard catch by Nick Meade that took the ball to the Wildcats 9 yard line. From there Harrison found Cameron Smith for a 5 yard score. Logan Brown would get the hold down and Brendan Salo made good on the kick making this a 27-7 game, with 1:07 left on the clock. Conner Walls would sack Wildcats quarterback Smoot with :11 seconds left in the half to keep Uncle Mo. on the Elks side, as the two teams headed into the locker rooms.

The third quarter was scoreless, but did hold two nice plays, one each from both teams. For the Elks #15(NOT ON THE MAXPREPS OR THE HUDL ROSTERS) would recover an onside kick to start the half and for the Wildcats after Josh Mullinger from Centerville muffed a punt TayVeon Smoot pounced on it.

In the fourth quarter Cameron Smith would score on a 16 yard catch with the PAT being good, we had ourselves a 27-14 game. The ensuing kickoff was another onside kick that the Elks Jonathan Bruder came up with. The crowd was smallish for a division one game became very loud on the Centerville side and I can’t hear you on the other side, as the cheer goes. Harrison threw into tight coverage with Bryce D. McMahon making a very good catch. With 8:25 left in the game Harrison plowed in from a yard out to cap off a 40 yard, 11 play drive. The PAT made this a 27-21 game. Jeff Tolliver would break a weak tackle and 43 yards to give the Wildcats a big first down. Tolliver would break another tackle on his next run, with the result being a 20 yard touchdown run. The PAT would make this a 34-21 game, with 5:54 remaining in the game. William Linkhart a 6-5 receiver for the Elks would break a tackle, after hauling in a pass and go on to score from 70 yards out. Salo connected on the PAT to make this a 34-28 game, with 5:23 left. Linkhart is a receiver who’s talent demands that he has double digit attempts come his way. The kid runs nice smooth patterns and has soft hands and with his height he makes things really hard on any defender, who try to defend him. The Wildcats would face 3rd and twelve with :49 seconds left in the game, the smart play would be to throw to Stephens, who was a nightmare all game long for the Elks. The Wildcats play caller called Stephens number and the result was a long gain all the way to the Elks 30 yard line. The drive would end without any points. The Wildcats how ever would light up the scoreboard one final time, when Tolliver out ran the defense from 28 yards out, after the PAT the score was 41-28 and that would be the final score of this exciting contest.
