The pafootballnews late game Saturday night found me heading to Wilson to catch their battle with Akron. This would be my 2nd time ever seeing Wilson, my first time there, and my first time seeing Akron play. I really like the stadium but as a fan, who was taking pictures in the stands along with notes for this recap, I have to say it looked a little dark. One of or photographers on the field also said it was dark down there. Overall minus the first quarter, this was a very tightly contested game. To me, the most impressive player I watched in this one was Matthew Covell. The big man caused a lot of havoc with his play. Before getting into the recap, I want to say how loud the Wilson cheerleaders were and no matter the score, they went all out in doing their job.

Akron got things off to a quick start with a 58-yard catch by Jacob Mazza. The kid made a fantastic run after hauling in the pass from Adam Mietz. A combination of a snap going awry and mishandled Mitchell Holtz had to run the ball into the endzone for a two-point conversion making this an 8-0 game, with 11:09 left in the quarter. Holtz would show his versatility when he picked off the Wilson pass a little over a minute after his two-point run. Mietz would find Holtz for a 23-yard touchdown after the PAT from Josh Mazza the scoreboard read 15-0 Akron, with just 2:01 going off of the clock. The Akron defense would roar again when Ryan Yaeger made a nice pic, at the 5:37 mark. Mietz would go on a 23-yard run to get things moving. We would have ourselves a 22-0 game after Aidan Smith plowed in from 2-yards out and Mazza true on his PAT kick.

Just seven seconds into the 2nd quarter Smith would muscle himself to a 22-yard run. The kid runs like for New England Patriots back Sam ‘Bam’ Cunningham. The Lakemen defense would bend as far as their own endzone before stopping the Tigers offense where Jared Jaques picked of a pass. The Tigers defense got the PAFOOTBALLNEWS hit of the game when David Kalinowski made like Ronnie Lott and crushed Evan Wolfe, at the 9:41 mark. The last 8:32 of the half would see a 15-yard power run from Aidan Smith and then two big plays from Matthew Covell. He would get to Luke Atlas for a two-yard loss and then follow that up by stopping Wolfe for a yard loss.

Defense would be the theme of the 2nd as there would only be one more score and that came from Akron, on 8-yard Smith run. Setting up the score was a 19-yard catch by Mitchell Holtz and a 21-yard run from Mietz. The PAT kick after the Smith touchdown made this a 29-0 game. Anthony Dispenzawould gets a pick to highlight the defensive effort from both teams in the final frame. The Tigers defense would also have back-to-back goalline stands to preserve the shutout.
