Jeannette picked up the 800th win in program history with a 24-7 victory over Greensburg Central Catholic on Friday night, improving to 6-1 on the season while the Centurions fell to 5-2.
Jeannette struck first. After missing a field goal on its opening possession, the defense gave the ball right back. Schaffer intercepted a GCC pass and returned it to the Centurion 4-yard line, then kept it himself on the next play for a 4-yard rushing touchdown, making the score 7-0 after a successful PAT with 6:45 left in the first quarter.
Jeannette added to the lead in the second quarter when Schaffer found Jayce Powell for a 9-yard touchdown pass, making the score 14-0 after a successful PAT. A fumbled Jeannette punt late in the half gave GCC the ball at the Jeannette 34, but the Centurions could not score, and Jeannette took a 14-0 lead into the break.
GCC got on the board in the third quarter on a play the Centurions did not have to move the chains for. Luke Semelka picked off Schaffer and returned the interception 74 yards for a touchdown, making the score 14-7 after a successful PAT with 3:47 left in the quarter.
Jeannette answered in the fourth. Schaffer kept it for a 10-yard rushing touchdown with 11:44 left, making the score 21-7 after a successful PAT. Majhi Sanders then made a one-handed interception, giving Jeannette the ball at the GCC 4. The drive stalled and McCalister Steele connected on a 31-yard field goal with 8:12 left to make it 24-7.
Jeannette (6-1) returns home Oct. 15 to host Fort Cherry, while GCC (5-2) travels to Riverview.
