From the opening kickoff, it was obvious that Bishop Guilfoyle was ready to repeat. And repeat they did.
Evan Chadbourn rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-0 victory over Farrell for the Marauders second straight PIAA Class 1A championship.
Bishop Guilfoyle’s defense recorded it’s eighth shutout of the season and intercepted Farrell QB Alex Myers four times.
Guilfoyle received the opening kickoff and turned it into 10 play, 62 yard touchdown drive capped off by a Josh Trybus 14-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.
The Marauders then executed an onside kick successfully, but turned the ball over on downs at the Farrell 5 yard line.
‘We wanted to take the ball and keep it away from their dangerous offense, said head coach Justin Wheeler whose team has won 32 straight games. “We really got the momentum and then executed the onside kick. It was important to keep the ball away from their offense for most of that first quarter.”
Farrell finally got an offensive possession with 2:56 remaining in the first quarter. The drive was 12 plays and extended into the second quarter, but the Steelers gave the ball up on downs.
Guilfoyle would take the next play from scrimmage and Chadbourn broke off a 60-yard touchdown run to give the Marauders 14-0 lead.
The two teams would exchange punts. But then on a 3rd and 7, Chadbourn would intercept Myers at the Farrell 34. The Marauders didn’t waste much time completing a 7 play drive with a Chadbourn 2-yard TD run and a 21-0 lead.
“All the hard work this summer paid off,” said the junior running back and defensive back. “We knew we had to control our emotions through the ups and downs and learned from the last year about how to approach the game. I think that gave us an edge.”
After each team punted to start the second half, Farrell had the ball in their own territory when Guilfoyle’s Josh Trybus intercepted Myers and returned in 26 yards for a 28-0 lead.
Senior Aaron Yasulitis would add a late touchdown which came after a Luke Frederick interception for the final 35-0 margin.
