The 2021 season saw Greenup County struggle. What has to change for you guys to have a winning season?
Our team dealt with a lot of off-the-field adversity, including the death of an assistant coach and other Covid-related issues. Our struggle to score points was at the core of our struggle on the field. Many factors contributed, but self-inflicted wounds via drive-stopping penalties and the inability to sustain blocks are two things we have zeroed in on for improvement this coming season.

Can you explain just what the grid game is that you guys play? Also, where do you think the grid games should be played?
The EKC grid is a game simulation scrimmage. The “games” include 3 quarters of varsity play and 1 for junior varsity competition. Game sites are rotated between conference members and I hope it stays that way.

Staying with the grid games. What do you try to accomplish in it?
It’s a game dress rehearsal so we want to prepare ourselves for our week 1 game in terms of substitution plans, getting the proper personnel transitioning on and off the field, and sideline organization. There may still be some positional battles going on where guys are trying to win a spot, but most of that should be done by then. As a coach, I hope to get some situational work in, especially for things like 2-minute.

As a fan and a member of the media, as a fan, I love the bowl games that the state of Kentucky has to have at the high school level, especially the doubleheaders on the same night. Will we see Greenup County playing and/or hosting any of them in the next season or two?
We currently have no plans to host or take part in a bowl game.

What is the hardest offense to prepare for?
No particular offense is as difficult as the variety of offenses we see week to week. You can see the Wing-T, spread, or wishbone in 3 consecutive weeks. It’s also not unusual for someone to change from week to week, which isn’t a great idea but it makes it difficult.

What is the toughest defense to go against?
-Any defense that can shed blocks, tackles well, and leverages the ball well.

The kicking game seems to be lacking at an alarming rate. How much time in practice do you spend on it?
Kicking goes as the availability of kickers goes. Even if we don’t have a great kicker, we give all special teams adequate time throughout the preseason and season. For our team, we’ve found it’s best to install our special teams systems and not deviate much from them in order to allow our players to play fast and confident while being flexible enough to adapt to exotic looks.

What are your thoughts on playing teams from out of state?
Geographically we are set up for that to be fairly easy. I wouldn’t schedule out-of-state teams if the travel was over an hour. In Kentucky, our RPI isn’t set up to be beneficial to play teams from other states, so to me, it’s a matter of convenience (distance).

How does it help a player to play multiple sports?
Kids miss out if they don’t try it and any coach that doesn’t encourage it should be fired immediately. You can coach until you’re an old man; kids only get one chance to play HS sports.

Have you been able to watch any of the USFL games, if so what have you thought about them?
I’ve watched very little so I don’t feel it’s enough to give an educated opinion.
