The 2026 High School Football season opened in Atlanta this season. Scheduling quirks due to America hosting the World Cup led the Corky Kell-Dave Hunter Classic to be split between two weekends. With the usual Saturday night finale on the Mercedes-Benz Stadium turf getting moved up to be the kickoff of the season.
Two doubleheaders played mid-week before the rest of the contiguous United States.
On Wednesday, the opened including a Gwinnett County twin bill, as the South Gwinnett Comets opened against the Lanier Longhorns of Sugar Hill. The night came featured North Gwinnett against the Grayson Rams. They games kicked off at 5pm and so the eponymously named Gwinnett schools score wins on opening day. South Gwinnett won 29-3. While North Gwinnett took a 37-0 lead in the second half, before Grayson answered with some running clock scores of their own to fall, more respectably, 37-22.
South Gwinnett 29, Lanier 3
North Gwinnett 37, Grayson 22
On Thursday, the games resumed with another doubleheader. Featuring two of the Classic’s stalwarts: Brookwood and Walton. The day opened at 5pm with the Brookwood Broncos battling the Cambridge Bears. At night, it closed with Roswell Hornets taking on the Walton Raiders.
It didn’t take long for Brookwood to build up a big lead. Eventually going on to setup a running clock and win comfortably, 52-7. Walton came into the night game as the favorite against Roswell, and were looking to fulfill that prediction. Until a 14-0 lead was scuttled by a pick-six. Another pick later gave Roswell the lead. And held on to win as Walton had no answers for what just happened. Roswell won, 32-20.
