Imhotep Charter had never won a PIAA football championship.
If they play like they did Friday night, they might be winning many more. The Panthers defeated Erie Cathedral Prep 40-3 to win the PIAA Class 3A title and became the first Philadephia Public School to win a PIAA football championship.
“I am really proud of these kids,” said an emotional head coach Albie Crosby. “I am very happy for them and also our city (Philadelphia) which goes through a lot of heartache. A lot of our young people go through things they shouldn’t so when these kids achieve goals like this, it’s an amazing thing.”
It was first title for Imhotep who lost 41-0 to South Fayette two years ago in the Class 2A Final. There was little doubt this night was very different.
The Panthers outgained the Ramblers 514 to 207 with running back Mike Watters rushing for 201 yards and 3 TDs to lead Imhotep. Cathedral Prep actually forced three first half Imhotep turnovers but could only turn them into three points.
Aamir Brown also scored two touchdowns and the Panthers defense shut down the Cathedral Prep passing game with blanket coverage holding quarterback Joseph Mischler to 9 for 34 for 84 yards and two interceptions by Brown.
