Last night I made the short drive to South High School to watch the Columbus City League matchup between Briggs and South. Both teams came in at 4-3, with Briggs on a three-game losing streak and South on a two-game losing streak. This was the homecoming game for South with the Thursday Night game coupled with a soaking rain all night long the crowd was somewhere between 200-300 as most fans opted to stay home.
The game with the soaked, slick field produced little offense with the total being a little under 100 yards as neither team could find any rhythm or footing. In the first quarter Quentten Loel, the Briggs quarterback muffed the snap with the result being a sack for a 10-yard loss by Joshua Toles. Later in the quarter DeShawn Simmons the South quarterback coughed the ball up and making the recovery for the Bruins was Ryan Palmer. The Briggs offense would get a 12-yard run by Mason Wemmer, who broke several high tackles. The 9-play, 43-yard drive came to a climax on a 5-yard touchdown run from Jason Burton. Loel would nail the point after kick to make this a 7-0 game with 55>3 seconds left in the quarter.
Defense and turnover rule the second quarter starting with a Simmons pick by Jordan Flemming with 6:48 left on the clock. Forty-seven seconds later Briggs put the ball on the ground when Wemmer mishandled the rock and making the recovery for South was Myshawn Nelson. Then a little over two minutes later South would give the ball back to Briggs when Simmons coughed it up and making the recovery was Wemmer.
South would show their only sign of life when Simmons hit Carmelo Penick-McDonald for four yards and a first down. From there Simmons picked up another first down with a run of 14-yards. The drive ended with 45 seconds left in the half when Simmons was sacked by Romans’ Ward Jr. for a loss of ten.
The third quarter flew by as fast as the rain fell with very little offense happening as the slick field and strong defense ruled
South got the first big break in the final frame when Christian Taylor recovered a Briggs fumble at the 9:00 mark. The drive ended with a punt. Jason Burton would find Ryan Palmer for a 26-yard touchdown to make this a 13-0 game, with 6.59 remaining in the contest. Briggs would get a 15-yard run by Tylan Brooks with 2;17 left on the clock but the drive and game ended before any more yards could be gained.
